Bipasha Basu ( (born January 7, 1979) is an Indian Bollywood actress and model. She was the winner of the Ford's Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest for 1996 and is currently one of the mainstream actresses in Bollywood. She is often cited by popular magazines and newspapers as one of Asia's sexiest women.

Early Life

Born on January 7, 1979 in New Delhi, India, Basu hails from a Bengali family. She is the second of three daughters to her parents, the elder being Bidisha, and the younger—Vijayeta. Although she was born in Delhi, her family later moved to Kolkata.

According to her, she had come into modelling and acting quite by accident, because initially she had planned to study medicine. studied science till the 12th standard, at the notable Kolkata high school Bhavan's Gangabux Kanoria Vidyamandir, and later took up commerce and studied at The Bhawanipur Gujarati Education Society College in Kolkata where she also did modelling and rampshows partime. Although, as pointed above, she intended to become a doctor, her aversion for dissections made her opt for chartered accountancy. However, in 1996, she met well-known model Mehr Jessia in Kolkata; the latter suggested that Basu take part in the Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest. She eventually participated, and won the contest.

Career

After winning the Ford Godrej Cinthol contest, Basu was flown to New York by the Ford Company, where she had a successful modelling career.

Basu made her debut film in Abbas Mustan's Ajnabee, with Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor. She played a married woman who goes all out to woo her husband’s married friend, and eventually won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her performance.

After a number film, next year in 2002, Basu starred in Vikram Bhatt's thriller Raaz. The film was a big commercial success and surfaced as the biggest hit of that year. Her performance in the film, she received her first Best Actress nomination at the Filmfare.

Besides acting, Bips, as her friends call her, did the famous video "Tu" for Sonu Nigam's album, Kismat and made a guest appearance in Jay Sean's music video Stolen.

In 2006, she won popular acclaim for her performance in an Item number during the song Beedi in the film Omkara. The song was a national hit, and Basu's pictuarization was appreciated.

Basu is currently dating actor John Abraham, They have been dating since late 2002. She previously dated fellow Bollywood actors Milind Soman and Dino Morea. During the summer of 2007 when after announcing the New Seven Wonders to the world Basu and another guest Cristiano Ronaldo were caught kissing at a nightclub in Lisbon, Portugal.


However, both parties have denied rumours of a relationship and say that they are nothing more than 'just friends'.

Even though Basu is a practicing Hindu and Abraham is a Christian, both families have accepted the couple. Basu has stated in an interview that though she was raised a Hindu, she believes that all religious groups deserve respect.

Controversies

On February 28th of 2002 Basu was molested by a man in a public nightclub in Mumbai. Basu's boyfriend John Abraham then chased the youth and thrashed him severely. Basu was reported to have left the nightclub crying. The police were notified, but any charges against the couple dropped almost immediately due to Basu's status and the circumstances under which the fight had taken place.

In 2006, Basu claimed to have been harassed by organizers of the India Day Parade in Edison, New Jersey. Basu was initially scheduled to lead the parade on August 13, 2006. Basu eventually appeared on stage late, according to her, because of the harassment. She said, "I wanted to attend the parade, but I could not." She explained that she was harassed physically and mentally in the car by two people who were taking her to the parade.

Actress Nidhi Gill of ‘’’Bipasha-the Black Beauty’’’ sent Basu a legal notice complaining that Basu had made derogatory remarks about the movie she had not even seen.

A cosmetic surgeon notified the press recently that Basu had failed to pay him for her alleged silicone implants four years after receiving them.

Philanthropy

Basu created her own website so that her fans could contact her and each other (http://www.bipashabasunet.com). All proceeds donated to and received by this website will go directly towards the Make A Wish Foundation.

On January 10th of 2007 Basu danced with sex workers at a charity drive in order to raise AIDS awareness in India and promote safe-sex.

Due to her boyfriend John Abraham's care for animals, Basu is now an animal rights activist and is a member of PFA and PETA.

M any TV viewers saw and applauded her acting in soaps on the small screen but Shweta Salve of Jhalak Dikhla Ja fame is now making headlines for her bikini photoshoot.

'I don't have any problem in wearing bikini. It's not the first time that I have worn it. Moreover I am comfortable wearing it,' says Shweta, who recently shot in a bikini for Maxim magazine.

The photographs have made Shweta, who is known as the sexy siren of Indian television, very popular.

'I won't do anything I am not comfortable with. I didn't do it unwillingly. It's like I have been doing it. I don't know why it's making news,' she told PTI over the phone from Mumbai.



The Mumbai girl, whose scintillating dancing skills in Sony television reality show Jhalak Dikhla Ja was noticed despite losing the title to Mona Singh, will now be seen in her first Bollywood assignment.

The film is Dharmesh Darshan's Bhanvra, which is undergoing post-production. Happy about her role in the movie, Shweta said, 'I am playing the role of Naina who is today's girl and want to live life in her own way. I am really happy to act in Dharmesh Darshanji movie.'

Shweta is among other television's stars, Ejaz Khan, Sangeeta Ghosh and Manav, who are playing lead roles in the flick.

'I can't give you more details about it as film is yet not released. But, It's really a good movie and I enjoyed doing it,' said the actress.

Shweta, who calls herself a complete 'Mumbaiya has signed some films and says she has a busy schedule for the year.

'I have signed some films and am thinking of accepting some more projects. But I would rather not talk about it right now. Let the right time come,' she said.

Angelina Jolie Mends Rift With Father Jon Voight

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie has ended her long rift with her actor father Jon Voight.

The pair has been estranged since 2002, when the Hollywood veteran said in a TV interview that his daughter had 'severe emotional problems'. She subsequently shut him out of her life and rejected his attempts at reconciliation.

But Jolie has started communicating again with the 69-year-old as she prepares to give birth to twins, reports contactmusic.com.


Jolie told Australia's Sydney Morning Herald newspaper: 'We are going to try to get to know each other and maybe try not to be this daddy and daughter, but to be there for each other as friends in the coming years.'

In a separate interview, Voight confirmed the pair planned to meet over the summer. He said: 'I'm sure we will, yeah.'

Actor Murray's wife seeks divorce

The wife of actor Bill Murray has filed for divorce after almost 11 years of marriage, alleging he abused her and is addicted to marijuana and alcohol.

Jennifer Butler Murray's complaint also alleges frequent abandonment by the US film actor, best known for his roles in Lost in Translation and Ghostbusters.

Murray's attorney said the 57-year-old was "deeply saddened by the break-up of his marriage".

However, he refused to comment on Ms Murray's allegations.

The complaint, filed on 12 May in Charleston County, South Carolina, alleges the actor would often leave home without telling his wife, travelling overseas to engage in "public and private altercations and sexual liaisons".


It also alleges Murray physically abused his wife, citing one incident in November 1997 when he "hit her in the face".

Ms Murray claims the actor's "violent, abusive and erratic behaviour... destroyed the marital relationship between the parties".

The couple separated more than a year ago when Ms Murray moved with their four sons to Sullivan's Islands, South Carolina.

'Loving parents'

Murray, who has been wed once before, married Butler, a costume designer and wardrobe supervisor, in 1997.

The couple had worked together on the films Scrooged, Groundhog Day, What About Bob and Ghostbusters II.

Murray's attorney said the pair had been "loving parents" and were "committed to the best interests of their children".

The couple signed a prenuptial agreement before they married in which they waived their right to alimony or support in the event of divorce.

However, Murray did agree to pay $7 million (£3.5 million) to his ex-wife within 60 days of a final divorce decree.

Court Gives Relief to Dutt, Manyata

In a major relief to actor Sanjay Dutt and Manyata a sessions court on Wednesday set aside a magistrate’s order which had asked them to appear in court to answer charges of adultery and bigamy.

The process had been issued by the magistrate after Manyata’s first husband, Mairaj-ur-Rahman, complained that she had married Dutt without getting divorced from him. However, judge S N Sardesai held that Manyata had given a proper divorce to Rahman under the ‘Khula’ system prevalent amongst Muslims and also recognised by Mohammedan personal law.
Thus the question of Dutt committing adultery did not arise, the court held while setting aside the magistrate’s order which required Sanjay Dutt and Manyata to come clean on the issue. Dutt’s lawyers had also been arguing that Manyata divorced Mairaj four years ago but he had done nothing about it until he heard that she was getting married to Sanjay Dutt.

Mairaj himself is currently in custody in connection with a criminal case where he is alleged to have sent obscene text messages to some Bollywood actresses. The court was told that legal process under section 494 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for bigamy and under section 497 for adultery against Dutt was not tenable as Manyata had given a proper divorce to Mairaj. The lawyers quoted several judgments to tell court that under the ‘Khula’ system a woman could give divorce to her husband by sending a notice to him through a qazi.

“We produced those notices in court that the qazi had sent to Mairaj informing him of the divorce from Manyata,’’ said advocate Rizwan Merchant. Merchant also said that there was no question of the divorce being invalid because Manyata had not sought Mairaj’s consent for it. “Under Muslim personal laws the husband’s consent is not necessary under the ‘Khula’ system and thus this divorce was perfectly valid,’’ Merchant said.

Q.: Your first film Haal-E-Dil is on the verge of release. How is your state of mind at this moment?
A.: At this very moment I am very excited and on the other hand nervousness is killing me, too.


Q.: Your father says that you have fulfilled his dream. Did you also have the same dream of becoming heroine?
A.: I talked about becoming a heroine for the first time while I was just three but my father didn’t take me seriously because of my tender age.

I am from a conservative Punjabi family where girls are not allowed much independence but my father allowed me total freedom to fulfill my wishes. Truly speaking it’s not his but my dream that I fulfilled today.

I am really glad that my father accepted my dreams as that of his and helped me throughout to make it true for me.

Q.: Your first film is by your father. Does it prove a better option for you?
A.: It’s really proved a better option for me. It’s only because our industry is loaded with talented people and there are very few amongst them who has the chance to show their talents. And there are many who have no filmy background to support them.

So, it really proved a better option for me to get helped out by my father but at the same time it proved wrong to some extent, too. There were many situations where I couldn’t even express my opinion thinking about how others will react.

Q.: How did you prepare yourself for your character?
A.: I learned acting from Kishor Namit Kapoor. Simultaneously, I went through theater workshops learning many things from famous theater personality Om Katare. Shyamak Davar taught me dancing and I spent few days with Habiba Madam, too.

In that way I tried my level best to prepare myself before facing camera. And that’s not all as I worked as production person with John Mathew for Shikhar and with Visha Bhardwaj for Omkara to learn more about films.

Q.: How is it necessary to learn about production to become a heroine?
A.: I think an actor should know about all nitty-gritty of filmmaking. The time an actor starts thinking that he or she has nothing more to know, his growth will surely stop.

Working with John Mathew I came to know about a director’s perspective towards his actors. There are few actors in our industry who has proved their prowess in filmmaking, too. I would love to be one of them.

Q.: Will you be a director in future?
A.: Yeah, if I have that chance. During the period of learning acting I used to direct songs for all other girls. Besides acting, I think, I have qualities to become a director also. Maybe one day you will see me directing some movies.

Q.: Did you ever try for any other film to act in?
A.: I was approached with many offers but I never found anything interesting in those stories. My father narrated me a story and I really liked it. I then requested him to make a film on the story.

Q.: Usually it has been noticed that new faces are introduced with romantic subjects. Have you ever thought of any such subject?
A.: Yeah, actually it maybe because of my habit of watching so many romantic films since childhood. At the same time one has to agree that no other subject can come equal with the freshness that romantic films can offer. It’s only because of the innocence that romantic films demand from a character that enhances the beauty of actors.

Q.: Please tell us about your character in the film.
A.: Name of my character in this film is Sanjana who is a happy go lucky character like me. She loves without expecting anything in return from anyone. And it’s only because of her innocence that two guys fall for her.

Q.: Usually Kajol carries the name of Sanjana in Kumar Mangat films. How do you relate yourself to her?
A.: To be very frank she is my most favourite actress. I have grown up watching her films only. I cannot even think about equality between us.

I know that I will have to work hard to get to her position but I’ll try for that. Actually the name of my character was supposed to get changed but I requested my father to keep the name.

Hero having the name of Shekhar and heroine called as Sanjana had been proved quite lucky with all our films and that is the reason behind my request to keep the name.

Q.: What would you like to say about Nakul and Addhayan?
A.: Nakul and I are pals for quite long time. Before commencing the shooting we have attended workshop together. That is the secret behind our onscreen chemistry. And about Addhayan, he is quite a naughty guy with a great sense of humour. I really enjoyed working with both of them.

Q.: How about competing with newcomers in the industry?
A.: I don’t believe in competition. I am here to make my dreams of becoming an actress true and never for any kind of competition. All the newcomers in this industry are my friends and I don’t want competition among friends. I would like wish all of them all the best for their future.

Q.: Have you signed any film other than Haal-E-Dil?
A.: No. I am waiting for this film to get released first. I’ll sign my second film only after knowing reactions of the audience. But offers from biggies of the industry have started knocking at my door.

Simultaneously, I am having offers from South Indian industry, too. But for the time being I am not ready for any southee.

Mallika 'ghearoed' by fans for MAAN GAYE MUGHAL E AZAM

Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam shoot almost came to a stand stilL during one of the schedules!

Producer Ratan Jain had a tough time with the Pondicherry schedule of Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam. Not that there was a problem with the film's lead pair Mallika Sherawat and Rahul Bose. In fact Mallika and Rahul got along famously as co-stars. It was the massive public that had thronged the sets to catch a glimpse of the sexy Sherawat.


Jain's repeated pleas to the people to keep their distance fell before deaf ears. The crowd just did not budge, refusing to keep their hands off Malika Sherawat.

"This practically brought the shooting to a standstill. Fans kept gheraoing Mallika refusing to leave her alone. No matter what we did, they refused to leave and made extra efforts to come close and catch a glimpse of the actress," a unit member revealed.

Producer Ratan Jain confirmed the incident saying, "Yes the situation had become slightly desperate and before it could go out of our hands I made bandobast of 100 security men immediately. Mallika is the lead actress of my film. Hence she was my responsibility and it was duty to see that there is optimum safety as a producer. I hired a local agency for her protection."

Prime Minister's Childhood Friend From Pakistan Arrives With Memories, Gifts

A septuagenarian has come all the way from Pakistan to meet his childhood friend and his family. And Ali Raja Ali Mohammad’s friend is none other than Prime Minister Manmohan Singh with whom he shared his school bench.

Despite his frail frame, Ali crossed the international border on Friday, carrying the soil and water from his native place, Gah, for his Manmohan Singh Mohna, who migrated to this side of the border after the Partition.


The naughtiness of childhood pranks shared with his buddy Mohna in the primary school were visible on Ali’s face, when he reluctantly shared his treasure of memories with mediapersons.

"I have not seen him since 1947, but we have exchanged letters a couple of times," said Ali.

Clad in white kurta-pyjama and sporting a white pagri, Ali, who has come here with his nephew Haji Ahmad, is not aware of any protocol to meet the Prime Minister. " Oh lae lengae, uske ghar chalae jayangae, bhabhi hain, bachae hain. Daftar ka nahin koi shauk mujhe, mujhae to woh 11-12 saal wali umar ka pyar pata hai (We will take the appointment, or we will go straight to his house, his wife and kids are there. I am not keen on meeting him in his office, I just want to see my childhood friend)," said Ali when asked whether he had any appointment with his friend.

Going down memory lane, he said Mohna’s father was in dry fruit business in Gallah Mandi. "I often used to steal something from his pocket during the school hours and used to get punished for it."

With moist eyes, he remembered the time when everyone in his village celebrated when they came to know their Mohna has become Prime Minister of the largest democracy in the world. "People from Multan and Pindi started claiming that Indian PM was from there, but we had his school certificates," said Ali.

Opening up, he happily showed the photographs of Gah village and Katasraj temple, a pair of Punjabi tillae wali jutti and soil from the school where both of them had studied. He has also brought the school records of Manmohan Singh from Class I to Class IV.

The water bottle from his village has special significance, it bears messages all over for the PM. Besides, he has also got a profile of Gah village published by district government of Chakwal mentioning it as the village of Dr Manmohan Singh. These gifts have collectively been sent by many other friends of Dr Manmohan Singh, including Mohammad Ashraf, Ghulam Mohammad and Shah Wali Khan.

Jade Goody returning to British TV

British actress Jade Goody, who was in the news for making racial comments against Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty in the reality show Big Brother, is set to return to TV.

Thesun.co.uk reports there was a dearth of offers coming her way after the Big Brother fiasco but now she will star in a show for Living TV, a British channel.

A source said: "Whatever she's done, viewers have missed watching her exploits. We need a working class hero and Jade fitted that role perfectly. Yes, she caused an outcry with her behaviour, but she's said she's sorry and spent quite a while keeping her head down. She's done her time and I think most viewers have forgiven her. We're now looking at what she could do for the channel."

Goody has had some success in previous years which shows like Jade's PA and Jade's Salon.

It's no longer about cold wars. The starry world of Bollywood is busy with caustic combats instead. So Aamir Khan writes a cheeky blog entry describing his smelly dog named Shahrukh while Amitabh Bachchan rates Shah Rukh Khan's new reality show as "Panchvi Fail". Bachchan goes on to compare Panchvi Pass's ratings with his own high-ranking KBC show. Salman Khan is brattish as usual, checking on Akshay Kumar's fee before naming his price.

The gloves are off in Bollywood. While yesteryear stars Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor and other antagonists kept their mutual dislike private, today the bitching is out in the open. The change has perhaps to do with Bollywood's changing dynamics. Bachchan has reportedly been paid over Rs 100 crore for his blog, so dishing out controversy is part of the domain, quips an industry watcher. Aamir probably felt that Bachchan was stealing the limelight, so he posted a mischievous comment. Two months ago, Aamir had demoted SRK, calling him the Number 2 star of the industry.

"Suddenly it's no longer a politically correct, diplomatic Bollywood," says a media observer. "Bachchan, who over the years has been the epitome of modesty and political correctness, has thrown caution to the winds, especially in his blog. The others seem to be following suit. One doesn't know whether this is for the better or worse."

Salman Khan, not given to something as literary as a blog, makes his views clear in more prosaic ways. He has been openly attacking actors like John Abraham and Vivek Oberoi and refuses to acknowledge their presence at public events. Khan's latest bete noire is Akshay Kumar, not because his girlfriend Katrina is more comfortable with Akshay than him but because Akshay charges more. Says an insider, "A corporate approached Salman with a project and quoted Akshay's price to him. The actor told the reps that he would charge at least Rs 5 crore more than that.”

The media has a definite role to play in flaring up star wars—take, for instance, the recent reports of friction between Rajnikanth and Shah Rukh Khan over a film. "The media tried to rake up another controversy between Shah Rukh and Hrithik over the Krazzy 4 song—reports said that Rakesh Roshan was not promoting Shah Rukh's song and only focusing on Hrithik's number," says an observer, who adds that stars are certainly more aggressive these days. "It stems from a variety of factors," he says. "It's like a chain reaction—one unsavoury reference engenders a series of retorts and rejoinders. The combination of factors—a highly active media with a growing penchant for tabloidish reporting, an increasingly competitive stance, and high stakes—is probably responsible for this kind of situation. But it could just be a temporary phase."

"There's been rivalry in the film industry from the days of Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor,” says an industry insider. "But all they did was not cross each other's path. They would not work together, and each one forbade his ‘regular' heroine from working with his rival." Bharathi Pradhan, a senior film journalist, says that even if stars of yesteryear spoke out, the media was not such a tremendous presence and there were no blogs. "What Aamir Khan has done is in bad taste,” she says. "He does not a sense of humour and should not have attempted it." Raj Grover, former production head of Sunil Dutt's company, agrees. "Though rivalry has always existed, I have never seen actors calling other names so openly. What Aamir has done is certainly in poor taste."

Aamir Khan injures hamstring again In 'GHAJINI' Shoting

Actor Aamir Khan injured himself again on Sunday during the shooting of his film, Ghajini, at the Ramoji studio in Hyderabad.

According to a unit member, Aamir pulled a hamstring muscle on the same leg that he had injured on April 23, when he had been hospitalised for a few hours. This time, however, he will be out for three weeks.




"The injury occurred again while Aamir was shooting on Sunday," said director A R Murgadoss. "Actually, he shouldn't have shot at all but he insisted. Now, the leg is badly injured and shooting is out for the next three weeks," the film-maker added.

Prior to his first injury, the Rang De Basanti actor was shooting double shifts to complete the 40-day schedule of the film so that he could return to Mumbai and focus on the post-production work of his home production, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na , which stars his nephew Imran Khan.
