Indiatimes Movies conducted a poll on 'Bollywood's Youth Icons'. We present to you the results

1. Shahid Kapoor

Actor Shahid Kapoor has been voted the ideal 'Youth Icon' in a poll conducted by Indiatimes Movies. He secured 38 per cent of the votes.

The actor made a bang with his film, 'Jab We Met'. And is not looking back. Known to possess Shah Rukh Khan's charm coupled with Aamir Khan's perfectionism, Shahid Kapoor is a teetotaler and doesn't smoke. His once-upon-a-time affair with Kareena Kapoor was much talked about. Though there have been link-ups with Vidya Balan and Sania Mirza, the guy is still single and ready to mingle.

2. Hrithik Roshan

Actor Hrithik Roshan came second place with 30 per cent votes.

His Greek God looks, perfect body and down-to-earth attitude, makes Hrithik Roshan an easy choice. His act in 'Jodhaa Akbar' went down well with the masses. Having struck gold at the box office even in his dad Rakesh Roshan's films, Hrithik became a household name with ad commercials. A one-woman man, the actor tends to steer clear of controversies.

3. Abhsihek Bachchan

Actor Abhishek Bachchan comes third in the 'Youth Icon' poll.

Actor Abhishek Bachchan has come back into the reckoning post his 'Dostana' act. The guy who has married the most beautiful girl in the world, Aishwarya Rai secured 16 per cent votes in the 'Youth Icon' poll. After movies like 'Sarkar Raj', and 'Guru', actor Abhishek Bachchan is one to be taken seriously. And his 'mobile-service' ad has also contributed to his popularity quotient.

4. John Abraham

Actor John Abraham came fourth in the 'Youth Icon' poll.

The actor became the talk of the town when he did his 'butt' act in 'Dostana'. He was also hailed 'gay icon' and 'sexiest man in Asia'. John is known to endorse products that are very young – cola, motorbikes, jeans... His love for bikes and gadgets makes him 'cool' and helps him connect to a younger audience. His fetish for fitness, too, makes him the ideal choice.

5. Saif Ali Khan

Actor Saif Ali Khan makes it to the fifth position in the 'Youth Icon' poll.

The actor is more talked about today because of his rollicking affair with Kareena Kapoor. However, Saif has revamped himself on the big screen and is ahead in the 'race'. With pictures such as 'Race' and 'Omkara', Saif Ali Khan is sought after today. He has also embarked upon production by starting his own home production. His first will be a movie directed by Imtiaz Ali and starring Deepika Padukone.

It's been a middling year, and here's a list of big-screen spectacular releases to look forward to next year. Things can only get better.

Chandni Chowk To China

Akshay Kumar strikes again. The Kung Fu Hustle style trailer is the the funnest looking in a long time, and Nikhil Advani's far too polished a director to let his scripts get completely asinine. Not that it matters, when its a masala film promising the spectacular and Kumar -- the man who doesn't seem capable to planting a mainstream foot wrong -- is in the centre of things.

3 Idiots

Ace director Rajkumar Hirani finally moves outside of his fabulous Munna and Circuit characters to take on the Indian education system.

The director has confirmed that this film is an original script, and not based on Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone (a good piece of news to all of those people who sat through the execrable Hello). Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi make for an interesting cast, but we're all just waiting to see Hirani bat again.

Delhi-6

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra became one of the most respected directors in the industry with his apathy-shattering Rang De Basanti a couple of years ago, and we've had to wait three years to see what he does next.

This one is a take on a seamy, colourful, mad part of Delhi called Delhi-6, and stars Abhishek Bachchan opposite Sonam Kapoor. We're expecting texture and metaphor, and the current trailer has our curiosity piqued. Bring it on.

My Name Is Khan

Karan Johar seems to completely have dropped the K, and the subject matter for his next Shah Rukh Khan starrer is intriguing, to say the least: Khan plays a man targetted at an airport because of his last name and his religion, and that discrimination gives rise to many a question.

Then again, the film's been written by Shibani Bhatija, who wrote Fanaa and Kidnap, so maybe we shouldn't go in expecting answers.

Kaminay

Vishal Bhardwaj leaves Shakespeare out of the mix this time with this magnificently named project, starring Shahid Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. Remember, this is the man who showed us just how capable Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor were, so it's wise to prepare for fireworks.

The film's story is still closely guarded, but all we know is that Taare Zameen Par writer Amole Gupte plays the villain in the film. Whatever, man. We're sold on Bhardwaj and that fantastic title.

Kambakkht Ishq

Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor star in this massive budget film about an Indian stuntman who becomes a sensation across Hollywood. The film features several prominent Hollywood players, including Sylvester Stallone, Carmen Electra, Bondgirl Denise Richards and Superman star Brandon Routh.

It's quite a coup by Bollywood standards, and one hopes for an entertaining evening of big-screen proportions

Imtiaz Ali's next film

After making Socha Na Tha and Jab We Met on a decidedly comedic note, director Imtiaz Ali has chosen to tread the relatively unpopulated romantic-drama waters for his next film, one starring Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone.

The film is currently jetting around the world and shooting everywhere, and we're just curious to see what Imtiaz does next.

Alladin

Sujoy Ghosh's film has been in production for the longest time. Ritesh Deshmukh stars as Alladin while Amitabh Bachchan takes on the role of the genie in this rather zany take on the original.

The film is a special effects spectacular and by now, we just want to see what in the world has taken this long to make.

Wake Up Sid

Director Ayaan Mukherji makes his debut with this film that promises to be interesting simply because of its unconventional pairing.

Ranbir Kapoor, pinup boy-to-be and current heart-throb of the masses, cast opposite indie queen Konkona Sensharma? We're waiting to see how these two very different genre-representatives get along, and the title sounds fun too.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani

Katrina Kaif stars opposite Ranbir Kapoor in this film by Raj Kumar Santoshi. That's right, the socially aware blockbuster-maker is back with a film that sounds pretty darned unusual.

The casting is a bit of a coup, the kind of casting that leaves these kids out to fend for themselves without being able to fall back on a massive banner or Akshay Kumar. Salman Khan, however, does make an appearance.

‘We are disgusted with politicians who provide no leadership,’ the actors say

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are the latest Bollywood stars to criticise the government for failing to tackle terrorism and protect citizens. Both said they were "disgusted" with politicians "who provide no leadership" while arming themselves "with so many security guards".
The actors were busy shooting for Renzil D'Silva's untitled project in Philadelphia when the mayhem broke loose in Mumbai on November 26.

"The government has failed us again. The BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) is advertising for votes while the bodies of the dead have not yet been cremated. Modi had offered Rs 10 million to the widow of Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief Hemant Karkare. The news has shaken the foundations of our city and destroyed our already shaky belief in our government's ability to protect us," Saif wrote in a statement circulated to the media and signed by both.
Added Kareena, "I am disgusted with the so-called political leaders who provide no leadership and ironically surround themselves with so many security guards while doing little or nothing for the security of the people who have voted them to power.


Saif also slammed the terrorists for killing "innocent people" in the name of "God" or "religion".
"As an Indian and a Muslim, I feel like expressing my condemnation and outright disgust toward any party killing innocent people in the name of God, Allah or whatever we choose to call him.
"I am so worried that the whole religion (Islam) will be judged and condemned. There are strong communal feelings running through all stratas of our society and I find it hard to defend the fact that there seems to be a Muslim hand behind every detonator. I feel a little scared as a Muslim now," explained the actor.

Katrina on top with six hits in a row: critics

British-born actress Katrina Kaif has delivered six back-to-back hits, bagged several brand endorsements and is now a highly sought after heroine - all the qualities needed to be crowned the reigning actress in Bollywood, say film critics.

"Katrina has immensely evolved as an actress. In Bollywood, actors are mostly known for the number of hits that they can deliver. Katrina has won in that respect hands down. She can undoubtedly be called a lucky mascot for her producers," popular film critic Taran Adarsh told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

After wowing audiences in the recently released romantic comedy Singh Is Kinng opposite Akshay Kumar, Katrina has successfully displaced top-rung actors, including Kareena Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra.

Her success story started with Namastey London and continued with Apne, Partner, Welcome, Race and now Singh Is Kinng.

"Last year was simply fantastic and, touchwood, this year is the same. I would like to thank god. I believe in enjoying doing the work I'm doing. It is also good to know that the hard work I have put in has shown result. I will continue to do so," Katrina said.

The 24-year-old star ventured into Bollywood in 2003 and was instantly written off because of her strong British accent. But after five years of hard work and determination, she is one of the most sought after actresses in the Hindi film industry.

Her next is Subhash Ghai's Yuvraaj, which is about the arrogance and overconfidence of contemporary youth. Set to release in October, critics are confident that Katrina has another hit on the anvil in Yuvraaj.

Mumbai-based film critic Anupama Chopra says there are high expectations from Katrina's performance in the movie.

"Katrina has had a fortunate choice of films" even though she "had a rather unfortunate start with Boom," Chopra said.

"She is a stunning looking actress and so far she is doing well with her glam doll image. We did see glimpses of an actor in her performance-oriented roles such as in Namastey London," Chopra explained.

Katrina is one of eight siblings, all girls. Her mother is British and her father is from Jammu and Kashmir who has since acquired British citizenship.

The actress spent her formative years in Hawaii but later moved to London. She started modelling accidentally when she was in Hawaii at the age of 14. Thereafter she continued modelling in London till she moved to Mumbai in quest of a career in the world's largest film industry.

She has also moved on to bigger banners and has teamed up with John Abraham and Neil Mukesh for a Yash Raj Films' project. Apart from that, she will be seen in Rajkumar Santoshi's next film, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, with Ranbir Kapoor.

Besides spinning gold at the box office, Katrina also has an assorted line-up of brand endorsements. These include Nakshatra diamond jewellery and Veet hair removal cream among others.

The actress created waves when she replaced Aishwarya Rai as the brand ambassador of Nakshatra last month, besides bagging the crown of being the most downloaded Indian actress in cyber space.

"Katrina is the perfect representation of the young, trendy and fashionable woman that Nakshatra targets. We feel that Katrina lends a refreshing look to the brand. We are excited about having her on board as the new face for Nakshatra," said Mehul Choksi, chairman, Gitanjali Group and Nakshatra.

Though the actress has acquired a star status in a short span, critics feel that she needs to work on more performance-based roles.

Said Chopra: "Katrina needs to evolve and emerge out of her glamorous image to do meatier roles like the ones Rani Mukerji and Preity Zinta were doing two to three years ago."

The wedding reception for Aishwarya, eldest daughter of Tamil superstar Rajnikanth, with young actor Dhanush, was the most anticipated and talked about event of the year.

The wedding on November 18 was a simple, quiet affair conducted at Rajnikanth's Poes Garden bungalow. The high profile guest was Rajni's neighbour, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The wedding ceremony was unusual because the thali (the South Indian version of the mangalsutra) was given to the bridegroom by Rajnikanth's guru, director K Balachander (unlike in the normal circumstances when the thali is presented by the father himself). After the wedding, it was work as usual for Rajni, as he chose to shoot for his new film, Chandramukhi.

Unlike the wedding, the reception on November 21 conducted at the Mayor Sri Ramanathan Chettiar Centre was a grand affair.

The hall was decorated tastefully befitting the father of the bride. Everyone who was anybody in Chennai was present, right from film to political personalities.

Outside the hall stood hundreds of people waiting to catch a glimpse of the stars. Rajni had instructed his fans not to come to Chennai to wish the young couple, as it would pose law and order problems.

Except for the VIPs, the others stood in queue, and produced the wedding invitation to gain entry into the hall. They did not seem to mind. After all, this was no ordinary wedding reception!

All guests had to go through a security check on the ground floor. The reception was on the second floor while vegetarian food was served on the first floor.

Absent was the loud musical performance that is the hallmark of weddings in Chennai. Only soft instrumental music wafted in the air.

Though people like actor Vijay's wife had been calling to wish the couple right from the morning, the function started at 6 pm.

The bride wore a red gold-sequined sari and the bridegroom wore a white silk dhoti and shirt. They were there on stage with their respective parents and relatives. Like his son-in-law, Rajni was also attired in a white silk dhoti and shirt while his wife Lata looked radiant in a golden silk sari.

But the lady who stole the show was the bride's sister Soundarya, who stood behind her elder sibling throughout the evening. She looked ravishing, as did actress Sridevi (not to be mistaken with Mrs Boney Kapoor) who gave her company.

Sridevi is the daughter of actor Vijayakumar, a close friend of Rajni.

Accompanying them were Shriya Reddy and her sister, Deepti. Shriya's first film with Mammootty, Black has just been released in Kerala.

Like he stood alongside Rajni when he undertook a day long fast to demand release of the Cauvery river water for Chennai, Vijayakumar stood at the entrance and received guests with a smile.

One of the first VIPs to arrive was DMK leader M Karunanidhi. As Jayalalithaa was expected to be present (and she was), Karunanidhi had stayed away from the wedding ceremony.

The moment Karunanidhi entered, Rajni stepped down from the stage and escorted him to the couple. While departing too, Karunanidhi was seen leaning on Rajni's shoulder. Karunanidhi's nephews Dayanidhi Maran and Kalanidhi Maran accompanied him, his son M K Stalin arrived later.

Other political heavyweights included G K Vasan from the Congress, Dr Subramanian Swamy of the Janata Party and Dr Krishnasamy of the Puthiya Thamizhagam.

Only the VVIPs were taken directly to the stage. Prominent actors, actresses and technicians had to stand in long queues to wish the couple. Hundreds of police personnel and security people from several agencies were engaged to control the crowd.

This year's National Award winner Vikram strolled in, clad in a white shirt and black trousers, with long curls down flowing down his head. This was his new look for Shankar's Anniyan. Madhavan arrived with his wife.

Vijay and Surya were present at the wedding, they were not seen at the reception. Though major stars from the Telugu and Kannada attended either the wedding or the reception, there were no artistes from the Malayalam film industry. Also noted was the absence of Tamil star Ajith.

The star of the evening was, yes, you guessed it right, the Big B. The moment he entered the hall at 8 pm with wife Jaya Bachchan, there was a moment of silence, followed by loud cheering and whistling.

The invited continued applauding when Amitabh Bachchan hugged Rajni.

Both Aishwarya and Dhanush touched his feet and sought his blessings. In return, he kissed Dhanush!

By the time the function got over, the couple and both the families might have been extremely tired.

But Rajni and his wife looked like the happiest parents smiling at guests and accepting their wishes. They seemed to enjoy every moment of one of the biggest day in their daughter's life.
