Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has tied the nuptial knot with his long-time friend Anubhuti Chauhan in a grand ceremony in Moradabad. Piyush and Anubhuti, who happen to be neighbours, got married late last night in the presence of close family members and friends, including the cricketers` Uttar Pradesh teammates.
Anubhuti, an MBA, is the daughter of Dr Ameer Singh Chauhan, who is posted as the Chief Medical Officer in Meerut."My son and Anubhuti are well known to each other for last many years. Anubhuti is very familiar and the relationship has now been changed from friendship to life partners," said Piyush`s father Pramod Kumar Chawla.

Jean Kent: Suffolk Gainsborough Melodramas Actress Dies

Film and television actress Jean Kent, one of Britain's biggest stars in the 1940s and 1950s, has died. She was injured in a fall at her home in Westhorpe, Suffolk, and died at the West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds at 03:40 GMT. Her death was announced by a close family friend, author and former film critic Michael Thornton. Her last public appearance was in 2011 when she was honoured by the British Film Institute on her 90th birthday.

Mr Thornton said: "I knew Jean for more than 50 years. She was a feisty, funny, outspoken character who never took herself too seriously. "She knew what it meant to be a star and regarded it as her job to live up to that position and never to disappoint the public." Kent's career included regular appearances in Gainsborough melodramas, which were popular with large numbers of newly-independent women following the outbreak of the Second World War. She made 45 films and during her career starred alongside Marilyn Monroe, Michael Redgrave and Laurence Olivier.

'Bodice-ripping melodramas'
Born in Brixton, south London on 29 June, 1921, she was the only child of variety performers Norman Field and Nina Norre. As a 13-year-old she performed at the Windmill Theatre in London's West End.

Kent met her husband Josef Ramart on the set of Caravan and they married four months later in 1946, with Stuart Granger as best man. They bought a farm near Sudbury, Suffolk in the 1950s and stayed there for 20 years until they moved to Westhorpe. Her husband died in 1989.

Kent also had a television career, which started in the mid-1930s in a musical called The Ship In The Bay which was broadcast live. Her post-war television appearances included roles in Up Pompeii!, Crossroads and Lovejoy. Mr Thornton added: "Because she became one of the most famous stars of the Gainsborough era, with its bodice-ripping melodramas, she was underrated as an actress. But she was a great actress."
Speaking on her 90th birthday she told the BBC she was still available for work."Oh yes, I'd work like a shot, as long as I didn't have to walk," she said.

Pakistan Women Break New Ground At Kabaddi World Cup

Sixteen young Pakistani women will make history this weekend as they compete in the kabaddi world cup -- the first time the conservative Muslim country has ever fielded an international women's team in the sport.
The traditional tag-wrestling sport involves players trying to tag an opponent before making it back to their half of the field. Kabaddi is hugely popular in the Punjab provinces of India and Pakistan, where it originates, and is played in countries around the world with South Asian populations. It has traditionally been seen as a macho sport but now Pakistan is sending a women's team to the November 30-December 14 World Cup in India. For 24-year-old Sayeda Fareeda Khanum, who comes from a conservative, religious family where she fought for years to be allowed to compete in sports, it is a dream come true.

"I have been sports crazy since childhood and was selected for national events in various sports many times, but I was never allowed by my family to attend a training camp outside college or university," she told AFP.
"But when I got selected for the kabaddi team, I told my mother that I would play this sport at any cost and left home to join the camp in Lahore." Khanum, the team's best defender, between sessions in a tough fitness workout at Lahore's Punjab stadium. "Getting the national colours was my childhood dream. I am going to India to make a do-or-die battle for my nation and prove that Pakistani girls can do whatever women do in other countries," she said.

And we have tried our level best, and by the will of God we will succeed," vice-captain Sumera Zahoor, who comes from a martial arts background, Having decided to build the women's team, the authorities wrote to top sports organisations and educational institutions, collecting a group of girls coming from diverse sporting backgrounds.

Half already represent various other sports like athletics, weightlifting and racket games, while a few new players with the right attitude and ambitions have also earned a place in the team. Training for the women in green, yellow and blue tracksuits begins with prayers and a recitation from the Koran. After chants of "Long live Pakistan" and "God is great", they begin physical training before moving on to wrestling techniques.
It has not been an easy task for the support staff to get the team together and direct their potential.
"All the girls come from different games, some are from athletics, some are weightlifters," Aisha Qazi, the team's coach, said. "These are individual players' games but kabaddi is a team event, so there is a huge difference and it has taken me some time to teach them."

Qazi, herself a first-class cricketer and international baseball player, said they were thrilled to be the first women's team to represent Pakistan in international kabbadi. Head coach Ghulam Abbas Butt said he was confident the women's team would live up to their promise. "I hope the boys' team will win the World Cup this time and the girls would also not disappoint in their first appearance," he said. "I have done this training with my heart, and they followed it the same way. These were new girls and they have done whatever I asked them to do. That's why I know that they will play well," he said. The Pakistan women face England, Mexico and Denmark in their pool matches while arch rivals India play the United States, Kenya and New Zealand.

Hyderabad's own tennis sensation Sania Mirza is all set to don a new avatar to boost morale of women, particularly information technology (IT) professionals, working in the Madhapur-Gachibowli IT corridor. After the infamous abduction and rape of a 22-year-old techie, Cyberabad police have reportedly roped in the tennis star to feature in a short film. Apart from the techie case, two more minors were raped in the Cyberabad commissionerate limits in the last fortnight.

Sources in the Cyberabad police said the short film, being made by police in coordination with some IT companies, would also feature a few Tollywood actors. The film would spell out 'Dos and Don'ts' for women if someone misbehaves or takes them for a ride. It will also reveal the measures to be taken to have safe transport and the way to avoid getting into trouble. The film would be screened at theatres, IT companies and other media channels.

When contacted, Cyberabad commissioner CV Anand was extremely guarded about the role of Sania Mirza and only said production work was on. "At this juncture, I cannot tell you as the production work is going on and it is a matter of a few days before it will be complete and ready for launch,'' Anand said. It is not clear whether the popular personalities likely to feature in the short film are doing it as their bit for social responsibility or for a price.

However, the fact is that an additional deputy commissioner of police-rank woman officer has been assigned the task of making the film and a team of police officials and IT employees were busy making the film using jargon like 'Action' and 'Cut'. In the latest update from the Jiah Khan Suicide case, it seems that the murder angle of the case is getting stronger. Early October this year the ‘Nishabd’ actress’ mother, Rabia Khan had moved to court to seek a probe into the apparent suicide case of Jiah. The court had then moved the Juhu police station to start an investigation on the matter. In the latest forensic reports that have been brought to light recently suggest that the allegations may be true after all. The reports that come from Kalina Forensic Laboratory imply that human flesh and blood has been found under the fingernails of the deceased actress. Also other signs of struggle have been noticed. Blood was found in Jiah’s inner garments.

FSL report`s finding also said that alcohol was found in her body suggesting incapacitation to some extent, which indicates that she may have been easily hanged by another person. The latest reports have now shed new light and the exhumation of the actress’ body would be in the pipeline for further investigation. The 25 year old Jiah Khan was found hanging in her Juhu apartment on June 3rd this year. Rabia Khan alleged that Jiah’s then boyfriend Suraj Pancholi, son of actor Aditya Pancholi was responsible for her death.

Lalu's son, Tejaswi Yadav, echoed him. "The principal conspirators are Nitish and the BJP as Laluji fought against them. The RJD rank and file is united like a rock. Those who received kickbacks are out and the person who filed 45 FIRs is in jail." Lalu's wife and former Bihar CM, Rabri Devi, described him a hero, who would remain so. She said he would continue to run the party and the RJD has convened a meeting of its office-bearers on October 6 to discuss his conviction.

RJD general secretary Vijay Krishna said the party workers were angry and not in despair. "Their anger is aimed towards those who conspired against Laluji." He said Lalu consulted senior party leaders, including MPs Prabhunath Singh, Jagdanad Singh and Raghuvansh Prasad Singh, about the future course of action in case he was jailed before leaving for Ranchi on Sunday. "He had delegated parliamentary business to Raghuvansh Babu." Krishna said the party ran the government when Lalu was in jail earlier and there will be no problem in running the party now. "Our MY (Muslim and Yadav) vote bank would further expand. There is no scope of rebellion as JD (U) leaders are hoping," he said. "We have senior minority community leaders like Abdul Bari Siddiqui, Taslimuddin, Mohammad Shahabuddin, MAM Fatmi, Akhlalq Ahmad and Ghulam Ghaus. They will mobilize people's support in different parts of the state."

He said the party would consult Lalu on important issues jail and Rabri Devi would be authorized to sign papers related to allotment of the symbol for elections. "Senior party leaders like Raghuvansh ji, Siddiqui ji, Ramkripal ji, will meet regularly under the guidance of the Madam (Rabri Devi) to take important decisions," he said. He said Tejaswi and his brother, Tej Pratap, will be part of the party's proposed collegium while Lalu would continue to remain its president. Krishna said the ties with the Congress may be reviewed next week. "There are differences with the Congress. The Congress itself is in the grip of inner contradictions," he said.

He said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi denunciation of the ordinance aimed at allowing convicted lawmakers to continue in legislative bodies was an insult to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Krishna said the party's plans to hold constituency level meetings from October 30 will continue. Separately, RJD's Madhya Pradesh unit merged with the BJP at Bhopal.

Diana director 'devastated' by reviews

The director of Diana says he has "no regrets", despite the film's poor reception in the UK. Oliver Hirschbiegel told the BBC that the movie's critical mauling was "devastating, but when you make a film you don't think about the reactions". The Telegraph described the film "a special class of awful", while the Mirror called it "cheap and cheerless". Hirschbiegel admitted the reviews had put off audiences, but he still hoped people would "make their own minds up".

"In all the other places where it's opened - in Poland, the Czech Republic, Turkey and Slovakia - it's been very strong," he said. "I think for the British, Diana is still a trauma they haven't come to terms with." Starring Naomi Watts, the film depicts Princess Diana in the final years of her life, with a focus on her affair with heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, played by Lost's Naveen Andrews. Oliver Hirschbiegel says his depiction of Diana is "very un-British" It entered the UK chart at number five in its opening weekend, taking £623,000 at the box office. This week, it dropped to number nine.

Hirschbiegel, who previously made Downfall, a German-language film about the last days of Hitler, called his experiences with Diana "deja vu, because it has the same reactions in the UK as Downfall had in Germany on release". "I hope it is a matter of stepping back and looking at it afresh in a year or so, because it is a very British story and I am a very German director." He added that Diana "was the most complex character I have ever tried to depict - more complex than Hitler. The one thing they both had in common was they were born actors".

Earlier this week, at the Zurich Film Festival, Hirschbiegel described the film as "very un-British" and described the critical reaction as harking back "to what newspapers like the Daily Mail would write about her back then - really vile things. So I guess I succeeded." The film has been sold to distributors in more than 40 countries and will be released in the US on 1 November, 2013.

Besharam review

‘Besharam’, Ranbir Kapoor’s latest release has a basic problem - it does not live up to its name. When you watch Ranbir you do not expect an out and out ‘Besharam’ comedy. However you do expect some smart assery if that is what is projected in all its promos. Good performances, the Kapoor clan, and some good humour could not really create the magic that you expect from the entire crew. The young Kapoor is a teen heart throb, here he tries to be more, and doesn’t really do too well. ‘Dabbang’ was a great make of classic masala film making that came from Abhinav Kashyap, and was pulled off with élan by Salman Khan. Salman stood out in his archaic 1990s hero avatar, delivering loudmouthed-applause-inducing dialogues looking as if he spoke like this every day. Despite Ranbir’s refreshing acting skills, he falls short – probably because he looks just out of ‘Wake up Sid’ cuteness. Humour is just spattered insufficiently and inconsistently. The parts where you end up enjoying the most are Rishi and Neetu Kapoor’s sequences, and by the end you are disappointed that they did not have as much screen time as you would have liked. It looks like Abhinav wanted to work with a plot that involved all three, but his ambitions stopped short right there. He did not bother with a plot line which was fantastical enough to accommodate all three of them sharing the screen space and make a compelling must watch blockbuster.

The story revolves around a good hearted orphan, Babli (Ranbir), who has grown up to be a car thief. He falls for the ‘beauty’ Tara Sharma (Pallavi Sharda). Rishi and Neetu play a slightly corrupt, cop couple - Chulbul and Bulbul Chautala. The movie has a predictable plot, atypical of masala flicks, using stereotypes of every kind. The love story between Babli and Tara is unconvincing. Not that you need a why and a how, but it doesn’t build up at all. Also, one major grouse I had with the movie was that I was waiting to understand why Babli was called Besharam in the first place. By the standards of how Indian movie heroes are generally shown wooing ladies, Babli was quite a softy, giving flowers to the leading ladies mom, carrying her grocery. Apart from what you have seen in the promos, Ranbir never goes beyond pulling out socks from his pants.

The other two Kapoors are fantastic. Every time Rishi and Neetu appear on screen they manage to entertain. From the first chase sequence to the climax, the few minutes that they have, they have pulled off the chemistry that they were known for back in the 70s. Neetu Kapoor plays gutsy, stands on equal footing as Rishi, and has a good comic timing. She jibes and jokes with Rishi, who is equally cute with her whenever they are seen together. It’s like watching an old endearing couple still in love who have managed to keep the fire alive because of their romance infused in a sense of humour.The first half of the movie is rather floppy, but the second half of the movie picks up the plot. But the climax is worth watching. Rishi, Neetu and Ranbir fight side by side; Rishi Kapoor takes the centre stage and you realise Kashyap probably made the movie only for this scene.

The music of the movie comes from Lalit Pandit who is the part of the 90s famed Jatin-Lalit duo. ‘Dil Ka Joh Haal Hai’ which is filmed near the traditional lahlahate sarso ke khet sounds like a track straight out of that decade. Another refreshing track is ‘Love ki Ghanti’ which reminds you of Kishore Kumar’s fun songs from the 60s. It has a conversation structure and sounds really fun! The title track and the other tracks, even though nothing to write home about are more or less enjoyable. As Ranbir fan, one would not really mind the movie. But it does not make an impact as ‘Dabbang’ moment for the hero. The superstar in the making is probably is a much better actor than a masala entertainer and that’s something that he has proven in his previous movies. The filmmaker did not have a proper vision for an actor of Ranbir’s calibre and this one is certainly not the best for either of them!
