Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) on February 8 |
Hollywood couple Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were a big hit with the crowd at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) on February 8 in London.
Angelina, who was wearing a black silk crepe Giorgio Armani evening gown, walked the red carpet with Pitt, signing autographs for fans, reports People magazine.
Meanwhile, Slumdog Millionaire turned out to be the biggest winner at the awards, with its cast and crew taking home seven prizes, including best film.
The Reader star Kate Winslet won the award for best actress and in supporting role Penelope Cruz won for Vicky Cristina Barcelona and the late Heath Ledger was named best supporting actor for playing the Joker in The Dark Knight.

The ‘Umbrella’ hit maker, who began dating Brown in a year back, likes her beau to be around her round the clock, reports the China Daily.
"She has to have Chris around her 24/7. If Chris is with her on a photo shoot and steps away for a second, she starts saying, ''Where did he go?” a source told OK! Magazine.

Indian Captian Dhoni's New Girlfriend |
Dhoni has a new girl in his life, and it seems that it's love at last. Sakshi Singh Rawat, a 20-year-old third year student of Hotel Management at IHM, Aurangabad, who recently finished her training at the front office at Taj Bengal, met MS Dhoni at the post-party of Race at Bipasha Basu's house.She came as a guest of John Abraham's, a mutual friend. According to a source from Mumbai, "She attends all his hair-cutting sessions.
Dhoni got his hair cut short because she likes short hair." Sources at the Aurangabad institute reveal further about their relationship.
"She's a very sweet girl, she talks about nothing but Dhoni and #8230;even her cellphone wallpaper is Dhoni. Her status on Facebook is 'in a relationship.
' The two even took an auto ride together when Dhoni had come to meet her here in Aurangabad. All that she talks about in college is Dhoni.

The Taxi Number 9211 jodi, no no, not John Abraham and Nana Patekar, but John and director Milan Luthria have teamed up to produce a film.
John turns producer with this film that they have been working on quietly since the last ten months. Scheduled to go on the floors in August, this romantic film will be full of SXF. The duo has already visited studios in Las Vegas and London. In fact, they are currently hunting for a leading lady and are in talks with one.
Reluctant to divulge any details, actor-turned-producer John says, “Milan and I have a wonderful working relationship. We had a great time making Taxi Number 9211. But hey, I wouldn’t want to talk about our film at this point of time.”
Milan on the other hand reveals, “John is certainly with me in this film as more than just an actor. We will both produce the film together and are already in the process of tying up with a top studio in the West. John’s a wonderful guy who is involved in every aspect of making the film. Right from scripting to the technical departments, he’s hands on. The film’s subject is one that is special and close to John’s heart. We’re both extremely passionate about making this film.”
Adds our source, “The film will be made on a reasonable budget with Rajat Arora, who wrote Taxi Number 9211, writing it.”

Dilip Patil, the chairman, said, “We have a co-operative cotton mill, an open end cotton mill, a knit processing unit, a yarn dying unit, a weaving unit and finally, a garment unit. We decided to experiment with T-shirts and launch it on a big scale. What better face than John Abraham who is hugely popular with today’s generation? Hence we approached him and when he heard about the social cause behind the efforts, he immediately agreed.”
Patil added, “The unit, that employs 1500 including 400 women, provides apparel to international brands such as Kappa, Steve & Berry, Pantaloons and Reliance, will be launching its own clothes’ line on February 16. The clothes that will acquire a brand name ‘Jayant’, include Tshirts and undergarments.”
John, on his part, was all praise for the noble cause behind the venture. “I am very impressed that most of the workers are woman and widows,” he said. “They are doing something for the poor and I am honoured to be called to inaugurate the unit.”

Hillary Clinton too deprived of her BlackBerry |
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton too has confessed that she has been deprived of her Blackberry and called for a need to figure out smarter way of using technology.
"I've been deprived of my Blackberry, so - at least during the day," said the former first lady yesterday while responding to a question from one of the State Department employees on use of social networking technological tools like Face Book and MySpace in enhancing department's diplomatic efforts and business goals.
Clinton felt the need to figure out a way consistent with security to use these tools that are quite often blocked by the security agencies and secret services.
"There are legitimate concerns about security, but I believe we cannot just take that at face value and stop thinking about it. We've got to figure out how we're going to be smarter about using technology," she argued.
Referring to the controversy surrounding the BlackBerry of the President Barack Obama, she said: "You've followed the concern of the President about having to give up his Blackberry. It is maddening, and we know that, but we have to figure out how consistent with what is the security that we need - not everything we want or everything that some people want for us, but what we actually need - we can use these."
After much diplomatic persuasion, the Secret Services allowed Obama to let him keep his BlackBerry. But fearing his security, he was given a high-tech special BlackBerry in which messages are sent and received through encryption and is not easily available in the market. His e-mail too is known to a very small group of people.
Clinton said the US, the State Department and the White House has been lagging behind in the use of latest technologies.
"The United States government has been pretty slow in coming to grips with technology," she said.
"I remember when Bill (Clinton) and I arrived in the White House, we had rotary phones. I mean, and I'll tell you what, they didn't even still have rotary phones in Arkansas. We were way, way ahead of that," she said.
Bill Clinton was the Governor of Arkansas, before becoming the US President.
Observing that the government department is behind nearly everybody, except in certain discrete areas, in terms of technology, Clinton said: "We are, in my view, wasting time, wasting money, wasting opportunities, because we are not prepared to communicate effectively with what is out there in the business world and the private world."
She said: "So I care passionately about this, especially since I've been deprived of my Blackberry, so - at least during the day, anyway - so, I am, again, soliciting your advice."

Veteran American actor James Whitmore dies at 87 |
Emmy award winning veteran American actor James Whitmore has died at the age of
87.
Whitmore died of lung cancer at his home in Malibu on Friday, his son Steve Whitmore said. The actor was diagnosed with the disease in November last year.
A World War II Marine Corps veteran, Whitmore bore a striking resemblance to actor Spencer Tracy. He was best known for his popular one-man shows about American leaders Harry Truman, Will Rogers and Theodore Roosevelt.
Whitmore won a Tony Award in 1948 for outstanding performance by a newcomer for his role of a cynical Army Air Forces sergeant in the Broadway production of "Command Decision."
After Broadway, he moved to Hollywood, where he received an Oscar Award nomination for best supporting actor for his second film, the 1949 World War II drama "Battleground", the 'Los Angeles Times' reported.
Whitmore's performance in 1975 film "Give 'em Hell, Harry!" earned him the best actor Oscar nomination.
He went on to act in over 50 movies including "The Asphalt Jungle," "Them!," "Kiss Me Kate," "Battle Cry," "Oklahoma!," "Planet of the Apes," "Tora! Tora! Tora!," "The Serpent's Egg," "Nuts," and "The Majestic", the paper said.
Whitmore also won an Emmy Award in 2000 as outstanding guest actor in drama series "The Practice".

THANK God for the mavericks, the non-conformists, the infidels, the les enfant terribles. They make things happen when kitsch becomes king; when creativity crumbles; when formula pervades, fungus-like. Imagine a world without rule breakers. And then imagine, like Anurag Kashyap: unbridled, unbounded, ungrounded....
Indeed, Dev D is one such flight of fancy from the filmmaker that definitely defies all conventions and demolishes all moulds. Not only does it rewrite the technique of the artistic medium, with its unusual cinematography, dizzy editing, non-linear plot narration, turn-of-the-century dialogues and breathtakingly bizarre audio track (music: Amit Trivedi, lyrics: Amitabh Bhattacharya), it completely revises the ancient text which has already made its mark in its various avtars , the latest being the high-pitched rendition of the self-destructive hero by Shah Rukh Khan in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Devdas.
Kashyap has always been a contrarian filmmaker, consciously steering away from traditional Bollywood with films like Black Friday, Paanch, No Smoking. However, while his earlier films were an innovative search for his groove and rhythm, Dev D is like that heady cocktail which has the vodka pitched perfectly with the tang. (Incidentally, Dev D likes his vodka with thumbs up, washed down in unlimited portions, morning, noon and night!) Set against the rich rural backdrop of Punjab and Paharganj (Delhi), the film traces the self-destructive sojourn of a young, contemporary hero who mirrors the existential angst of the proverbial outsider, made legendary in the writings of Satre, Camus, Kafka, Kerouac and the ballads of Kurt Cobain.
But Dev D (Abhay Deol), unlike Devdas, isn't a blast from the past. In his rootlessness, his lack of purpose and his complete disconnect with the real (read traditional) world, he reflects the mindset of the archetypal new millennium 20-something who doesn't know how to blend tradition with modernity, permissiveness with orthodoxy, Oxford with Bhatinda. And so, he asks his childhood sweetheart, Paro (Mahi Gill) to send him her nude photographs through e-mail, yet can't handle the quandary about her virginity and pronounced sexuality. In a fit of aggrieved machismo, he spurns her wild sexual adventurism which sees her cycling to the neighbouring fields at the break of dawn with a mattress meticulously rolled up on the carrier for a clandestine tryst with him. (Ever seen the bharatiya naari do this in Indian cinema? Bravo, brave new Bollywood!) Little does he realise that Paro isn't mere putty in his hand and is unwilling to subject herself to any kind of ‘emotional atyachar', in the name of love.
Having given vent to her anger and pain, she simply moves on while the already disconnected Dev becomes even more dysfunctional with his alcohol and drug addiction. He moves to a seedy hotel in Paharganj and ends up after a drunken stupour in young Chanda's (Kalki Koechlin) pink and purple boudoir. Once again, Kashyap reinterprets the self-sacrificing courtesan, Chandramukhi in completely post-modern terms. Here, she is Lenny, the schoolgirl who ends up as the sex worker, Chanda, after being disowned by family and friends because she featured in a lewd MMS, that sent the whole nation in a lustful tizzy. `And they call me a slut!' exclaims the feisty escort who attends college by day and plays Florence Nightingale in shorts by night.
The relationship between Dev and Chanda begins with hate, scorn and derision with the decadent Dev unleashing his chauvinism and me-centrism on the hooker. But when the haze of cocaine lifts, the heartburn begins, once again. After having stooped to unimaginable lows, our hero dreams of a second chance. Will he get it or is Devdas destined to waste away forever? The last we saw him was at a non-descript momo joint in the seedy by-lanes of Paharganj, waiting for nirvana. Of course, he's all by himself, since proud little Paro's moved on and survivor Chanda's too strong to play doormat, willing to give up her slutty ways, for love alone.
Dev D is indeed a coming-of-age film, not merely for the protagonist, Devender Singh Dhillon, but it is a brilliant breakthrough for Bollywood too. It really doesn't matter whether the film ends up as a box office scorcher. What matters is the fact that for the discerning viewer, Dev D is a tryst with milestone cinema, reminiscent of Baz Luhrmann's Shakespeare-shaken-and-stirred in Romeo and Juliet. Kashyap, however, gets even more adventurous and adds a progressive flourish to both the plot and the characters which are played to perfection by the three lead players. If Mahi and Kalki are riveting new finds, assured of a long innings in cinema, then Abhay Deol adds a whole new meaning to the term `Unconventional Hero'. Manorama Six Feet Under, Oye Lucky, Lucky Oye were just teasers. Dev D is the class act from the Deol who cleverly flew over the cuckoo's nest. Don't miss this film which completely reinvents the musical love story, with zany numbers like ‘emosanal atyachar', ‘saali khushi', ‘nayan tarse' and the rest. More importantly, it might just go down in history as one of the most radical Indian films, at least in its delineation of male and female sexuality.

The actress who was inside her car near Infinity Mall, Andheri at the time of the incident jumped out from the vehicle when she noticed a poor boy unaware of a car rushing towards him.
Asin had clearly no time to contemplate her moves and after jumping out of her car, she jumped across the barrier, lifted the child but lost her balance and fell on the ground. The child landed on Asin and was saved.
According to a source, Asin suffered severe bruises on her arm and wrist. "Her arms were wrapped in bandages for several days and Asin had to wear full sleeve costumes for her photo shoots", added the source.
Well Asin after all that reports of your rude behaviour, this news comes as a whiff of fresh air.

Money can't buy you love but it sure comes in handy if you're getting your girlfriend a Valentine's Day present. Which is exactly what UK-based businessman and Shilpa Shetty's boyfriend Raj Kundra learnt when he forked out $15.4 million (about Rs 75 crore) for an 11.7% stake in Rajasthan Royals, the first season champs in the Indian Premier League (IPL). "It is a very expensive gift,'' said Shilpa. "I trusted Raj's business acumen and am really proud to be the co-owner of Rajasthan Royals. Being brand ambassador for this team, both our name and our money are at stake.
But this is the most reliable team and they take the game very seriously.'' Asked if the couple's decision had anything to do with the Royals winning last year's final, Shilpa said, "I had bet on this team last season. Plus, the Rajasthan Royals have a huge fan following not only in India but also in the UK where Raj stays. So it was a well-thought out decision.'' Shilpa also has another reason to back the Royals. "They were considered the underdogs--just like I was. That's also why I backed them from the word go.''
As an ambassador for the team, Shilpa's work is cut out. "My association is meant to raise the brand value of the team, making sure the focus doesn't shift from the game.'' The actress will soon be launching a talent hunt for cheerleaders for the Royals. "My experience in Bollywood will help me contribute to the music video, merchandising and other publicity.'' Britney Spears Taking Her Sons on Tour |
It's off to the circus for Britney Spears's children.
The pop star took to her blog Monday to knock down a report that her upcoming two-month tour was in trouble because of a snag over whether she could travel with her two boys.
"Both Sean Preston and Jayden James will, in fact, be joining Britney throughout the duration of her tour," says Spears's blog.
Spears ex, Kevin Federline, 30, has primary custody of the boys, ages 3 and 2, but Spears has nearly 50-50 access to them in visitation rights.
Her Circus tour kicks off March 3 in New Orleans and ends April 28 in Chicago. Spears, 27, says she spent the weekend lounging by the pool checking out sketches of costumes.
"Britney is so excited to kick off her tour," her blog says. "She has been enjoying every moment of rehearsals and is looking forward to performing in front of a live audience again."
Spears also revealed more details about the tour, including a description of the elaborate stage patterned off a three-ring circus with multiple acts taking place at the same time.
"It's sexy, fun, explosive, and full of surprises," says designer Jamie King. "While avoiding such traditional circus elements as live animals, we've created something innovative and exciting using contortionists, dancers, lighting, fire and other special effects."

Ash won't accept award without Dad. The French are an emotional people. But even they must not have been prepared for Aishwarya Bachchan’s response when they conferred their prestigious Officer Dan Ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres honour on the pretty Bollywood actress.
“Thank-you, but not now,” is what Ash is reported to have told the French government when its second highest civilian award was announced in her name. Incidentally, this honour has been conferred earlier on Hollywood actors Meryl Streep and Robert Redford. And, on Shah Rukh Khan as well. There’s only one higher French civilan honour — the Legion d’honour which father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan, Satyajit Ray and Pandit Ravi Shankar have received.
However, Ash was not turning down the French award. She was just putting it off until her ailing father, Krishna Raj Rai, was well enough to attend the award ceremony. “I wanted my entire family — and that includes my parents, brother, sister-in-law, my husband and his parents, sister and brother-in-law — to be there. My father has been unwell and I wanted him to be there at this important moment,” said Ash. “It will be a glorious moment. But not without my father!” Now that Krishna is well enough, Ash has asked the French government to go ahead with the ceremony. It is likely to be held in Paris when the actress attends the world premiere of her film, Pink Panther 2. “My father will have to brave the long flight. There’s a long list of dos and don’ts for him. But worth it, don’t you think,”Ash said.

Gary Collins arrested, suspected of DUI |
Authorities say they arrested actor and TV host Gary Collins on suspicion of drunken driving. According to an arrest report, deputies in the coastal county of Santa Barbara pulled Collins over Saturday evening after noticing him driving a motor home erratically. The 70-year-old was arrested by the California Highway Patrol after failing a field sobriety test. He was later released on $25,000 bail.The arrest comes roughly 13 months after Collins pleaded no contest to driving under the influence and served a four-day jail sentence in a suburb of Los Angeles. He was placed on two years of informal probation, and records show he was admonished about the dangers of drunken driving.
Records also indicate he was convicted of DUI in 2004 in Malibu. They did not indicate whether he has an attorney.
