Ashton Agar breaks 111-year record in Ashes

Australia's Ashton Agar today broke a 111-year record during the second day of the first Ashes Test against England here at Trent Bridge. Scorecard The 19-year-old left-handed batsman became the first debutant in Test history to register a half century. He came agonisingly close to world record century but fell short by 2 runs. Agar was the top scorer in Australia's first innings which ended at 280 in 64.5 overs.

Agar made a 101-ball 98 with 12 fours and 2 sixes. He and Phil Hughes had a world record partnership of 163 runs for the 10th wicket. The crowd and players gave a standing ovation to Agar as he walked back to the pavilion after falling to a pull shot off Stuart Broad. It was heartbreak for the youngster having come so close to a historic hundred. However, his efforts with the bat gave Australia a 65-run first innings lead. 98 is also Agar's highest first-class score, bettering 71 not out. Before this match, he had played only 10 first-class matches. Australian Prime Minister called Agar's innings as "stunning, gutsy and agonising." He tweeted: "What a stunning, gutsy, agonising 98 from Ashton Agar in the Ashes Test."

The overall previous best by a No. 11 batsman in Tests was West Indies' Tino Best's 95 last year against England at Edgbaston, Birmingham. Warwick Armstrong, also of Australia was the previous highest scorer at No. 11 as a debutant with 45 not out. He had scored those runs against England in Melbourne in 1902. Agar, a specialist left-arm orthodox spinner, was handed debut by Australia on the opening day on Wednesday. He was given the Baggy Green Cap by former fast bowler Glenn McGrath.

Historic abortion bill passed in Ireland; MPs vote 127 to 31 in favour

Ireland's Parliament has passed the historic and ground breaking pro-abortion bill. After 48 hours of negotiations, Irish MPs who spent all of Thursday and Friday night jostling over the highly controversial legislation finally pushed through the Protection of Life in Pregnancy Bill. Members of the Dail voted by 127 to 31 for the motion that will for the first time ever allow abortion in catholic Ireland.

Abortion services, however, will not be open for one and all. The bill allows abortions only when a pregnant woman's life is under threat due to the pregnancy or if she is suicidal. The bill was introduced after Indian dentist Savita Halappanavar died in hospital in Galway in 2012 after being denied a termination. An inquest was told that Savita was denied abortion twice because Ireland "is a catholic country."

Savita was 17 weeks pregnant when she was admitted to hospital in Ireland on October 21 and died later from septicaemia and a rare strain of E coli, four days after she lost her baby. An inquest revealed an abortion would have actually saved the 31-year-old Indian dentist. The victory is being attributed single handedly to Ireland's Prime Minister Enda Kenny who despite facing the biggest in-party revolt and threats of social ostracization by the Church went ahead with the legislation.

Ireland's European affairs minister Lucinda Creighton who is the most senior member of Kenny's party voiced concerns against the bill and voted against it. She now faces permanent expulsion from the Fine Gael parliamentary party. It has been 21 years since a judgement was passed in 1992 by the Supreme Court in Dublin - is now famously known as case X, which said abortion should be allowed if there was a threat to the mother's life, including suicide.

The case involved a 14-year-old rape victim who became pregnant and was refused permission by Irish authorities to travel to the UK for an abortion. However successive Irish governments have failed to garner courage to go ahead with the legislation due to strong protests from anti-abortion groups fearing a backlash. The Fine Gael-Labour coalition government is the first in over two decades to attempt to bring in a legislation introducing abortion. Catholic bishops have branded changes to Ireland's strict abortion regime as morally unacceptable saying "if approved would make the direct and intentional killing of unborn children lawful in Ireland."

Actor Ram Charan, we discovered, has recently turned vegetarian. And no, this has nothing to do with health or lifestyle reasons. He spoke exclusively to us about his reason for turning vegetarian.

"I got a dog as a gift from my wife Upasna, on my birthday on March 27 this year. The first time I saw this pup, there was a sense of comfort and positive vibe instantly. When my wife asked me what we should name him, without thought, I immediately said, 'Brat'."

Brat was the name of my earlier pet, a black Labrador, whom I loved immensely. we had many dogs in the family, but this was the only one I connected with. Sadly, I lost him six years ago due to my negligence. He was with me for 18 months. Usually, I would always have him on leash. but that morning, I went for a jog at 3am, leaving him unleashed thinking he would be safe at that hour. But unluckily, a car ran over him. he died in my arms."

"It's been six years, but I hadn't gotten over Brat. But when I saw my current Brat, after all these years, I felt an instant connection. since I named this pup Brat after my old Labrador, I am anxious. I don't want anything to happen to him because of me."

Orlando Shaw, 33, of Nashville, told local News Channel 5 he'd lost count of how many kids he had by how many mothers – he mused he'd fathered "roughly" 18 kids with 17 women – but there was no way he'd ever be able to support them.
"To be honest with you, don't nothing come to a dreamer … I go everywhere looking for a job, where am I going to get one with my lengthy record?" Shaw told the station, referring to a criminal record that has made it hard for him to land work.

"I'm just hoping one day I'll get lucky and might scratch off the numbers or something. I play the hell out of the Tennessee lottery," he said.
"They're my kids, I love my kids and I could (not) care less what anybody else thinks about it," he added.
With the help of the state's child support services, Shaw's exes sued him for years of unpaid child support, the station reported.
So far, the state has been covering his tab, amounting to more than $7,000 a month to feed and clothe his massive brood.

Child Support Court Magistrate Scott Rosenberg told News 5, "How do we apply our child support guidelines to this many children in this many households?"
News 5 said Shaw would probably go to jail if he couldn't pay.
Shaw said he didn't regret having so many children, but was thinking about getting "fixed," or having a vasectomy.
"I was just young and ambitious and I loved women. You can't knock no man for loving women," he said.
"What I didn't know, when I turned 33, everything I that did from 16 to 18 is biting me now."

IPL spot-fixing scandal: Vindoo Dara Singh says he betted on behalf of Chennai Super Kings owner Gurunath Meiyappan, claim sources

Reacting to the scandal, Sports Minister Jitendra Singh today said, "These are moral issues, people need to think for themselves."

Chennai/Mumbai: Actor Vindoo Dara Singh has told The Mumbai Police yesterday visited the Mr Meiyappan's home in Chennai as part of their investigations into the spot-fixing scandal. But Mr Meiyappan was not home and the police team affixed summons to his door. One of Mr Meiyappan's managers accepted the summons on his behalf.

Mr Meiyappan has been asked appear before investigators of the Mumbai Crime Branch between 11 am and 5 pm today. Mr Meiyappan, however, has sought more time and will appear before the police only on Monday, sources said.

Police sources claim Mr Meiyappan will be confronted with Vindoo to verify his claims.

Police sources say that they have also intercepted several "friendly" phone conversations between the actor and Mr Meiyappan. Immediately after one of these calls, the police sources allege, Vindoo called up a bookie. The police had yesterday emphasized that they have no confirmation as yet that the Chennai Super Kings CEO has any links to alleged betting or spot-fixing in the IPL.

Vindoo had also named some Bollywood personalities, according to sources. Vindoo was arrested on Tuesday. He is accused of having links with bookies allegedly involved in spot-fixing.  He has been charged with cheating and forgery and will be in police custody till today.

Supreme Court rejects Jagan's bail petition

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the bail petition of YSR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, popularly called Jagan, in a case of disproportionate assets.

The apex court also cancelled the bail of Mr. Reddy’s auditor Vijay Sai Reddy and directed him to surrender by May 30, CBI counsel Ashok Bhan told reporters outside the Supreme Court.

The court also rejected the bail plea of industrialist Nimmagadda Prasad, an accused in the case.

The Supreme Court directed the CBI to complete its investigations in four months.

Mr. Jagan, a Lok Sabha member from Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, was arrested by the CBI on May 27 last year.

NSUI leader Suraj Thakur suspended for allegedly dancing naked at a party in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Suraj Singh Thakur, the Mumbai chief of National Students Union of India (NSUI), has been suspended for allegedly dancing naked at a party function in the Mumbai suburb of Kandivili last month.

Reports on Tuesday stated that Thakur was drunk during a function and was caught on camera allegedly dancing naked at the NSUI camp held in Kandivili on April 14.

Thakur, who had been re-elected as NSUI president in December 2012, was suspended on Monday after the matter came to fore.

However, it is still unclear as to what made Thakur and two other NSUI office bearers do it.

Sources claim that there may have been a ragging of sorts with seniors asking the new entrants to button down.

The video of Thakur allegedly dancing naked was uploaded on YouTube and was trending, but it has now been removed from the website.

Beside Thakur, the NSUI national president has also suspended two other office bearers, who were also drunk at that time and caught shaking their leg with him.

Thakur shot to fame after he led vociferous protests against the book by Rajiv Gandhi's alleged killer A G Perarivalan in May 2011.

The NSUI is the students' wing of the Congress and the party has taken the matter very seriously. According to reports, Suraj Singh Thakur and two other NSUI office bearers could be expelled from the organisation after proper verification of the matter.

Shootout At Wadala Movie Review: Watch out John's incredible act

Movie Review: Sanjay Gupta's Shootout At Wadala largely draws inspiration from journalist-author S Hussain Zaidi's Dongri to Dubai-6 decades of the Mumbai mafia. But the maker takes the cinematic liberty of changing the material at hand to make his film and characters more engaging. Or should we say largely entertaining.

15 minutes into the film you know Gupta means business as knives gash, guns explode, blood flows, actors mouth expletives galore and items girl gyrate shamelessly.

SAW has two protagonists—Manya Surve( John Abraham) a bright college student from the 70s, who finds himself inexorably drawn into a vortex of crime. The other leading man is Aafaque Bagraan(Anil Kapoor) a trigger-happy cop who wants to clean up the streets of the maximum city.

As the police and the criminals play the regular usual cat and mouse game; the screenplay introduces the viewer to endless gangsters and their girls. There's Vidya( Kangana Ranaut), Manya's love-interest, Sheikh Munir(Tusshar Kapoor), Gyanchod (Siddhanth Kapoor) and a couple of more hoodlums who are his henchmen. And you have their deadly opponents—the Haksar brothers, Zubair ( Manoj Bajpayee) and Dilawar(Sonu Sood). Manya and Zubair wrest to take over the Mumbai mafia. Quite naturally the opposing gangs bay for one another's blood. And in true Bollywood style, the slaying is interrupted only with the swaying; so you have three item songs lined up. The first item has adult star, Sunny Leone, whose song—Laila teri Le Legi is alone worth the price of a ticket. This Canadian-Indian girl is such an object of desire; she makes other dance girls pale in comparison.

The other selling point of the film is Milap Zaveri's dialogue. Many of the lines are claptraps. But be warned, there's a liberal peppering of filthy lingo that will make you cringe. The performances are largely A-grade. Manoj tops the list. And though he's a Mafioso, his demeanour will get the maidens to melt. Sonu who plays Dilawar, succeeds in spreading menace and speaks eloquently with his eyes.

John is the one with the maximum screen time. From vulnerable to invincible, from a testosterone wonder to a believable actor, Manya is his career's best act. Tusshar is earnest and effective. Kangana may not have the item song benefit but she has recall value as the anguished gangster's moll.

Siddhant Kapoor, son of baddie Shakti Kapoor is also a young talent to watch out for.

Anil Kapoor does his encounter specialist act with elan. He's supported ably by Ronit Roy, Mahesh Manjrekar and Jackie Shroff who puts in a guest appearance as the police chief.

SAW ultimately belongs to Gupta, who stays true to the genre and makes a welcome return to the credible lot of Bollywood directors.

Kerala's Haritha V. Kumar secures first rank in civil services examinations

First Keralite in over 20 years to top civil services

By topping the civil services rank list of 2012 Haritha V. Kumar (26) has become the first Keralite in more than 20 years to achieve this distinction.

The last time a candidate from Kerala — Raju Narayanaswamy — bagged the top rank was in 1991.

An engineer by training and an ardent lover of Carnatic music, old Malayalam movie songs and Malayalam literature, Ms. Kumar is currently undergoing training as an Indian Revenue Service Probationer at the National Academy of Customs Excise and Narcotics (NACEN) at Faridabad. Her last shot at the civil services examination was in 2012.

Ms. Kumar, who resides at Thycaud, did her schooling at the St. Theresa’s Convent School in Neyyattinkara near here before joining the Electronics and Communication programme at the Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, here. Choosing Malayalam literature as an optional subject was a foregone conclusion for Ms. Kumar as she prepared to tackle the civil services examinations. She told The Hindu on Friday that empathy, induced by literature’s portrayal of the realities of life, was a much-needed quality in a civil servant. Her other optional subject was Economics.

Even while undergoing training for the IRS, Ms. Kumar had her sights set firmly on the Indian Administrative Service. According to her, the training she received at the NACEN and her daily discussions and debates with fellow officers at NACEN gave her the much-needed confidence and the poise to face the UPSC interview. She is among those who believe that hard, systematic work and unwavering dedication — and not much by way of brilliance — is what it takes to succeed in the civil services examinations.

Daughter of R. Vijayakumar — a businessman— and Chithra Vijayakumar, a homemaker, Ms. Kumar has two younger brothers who are twins. One of them is currently preparing to write the civil services examinations.
