At the age of 22, Tania Sachdev became the .CIfirst Indian chess player to win the title of International Master and Woman Grandmaster. Tania won her first international title when she was only eight. She has already won the World and Asian junior titles. Her current ELO rating is 2423. Recently she topped the Asian Chess Championship with 6.5 points out of nine rounds.
A student of Sri Venkateshwara College, Delhi University, she discovered her interest for the game at the age of six.

“It was too early for me to know what winning and losing meant.ljust pursued it as a hobby.” However, she soon realised that only the game of chess was going to decide her future move. “I was good in studies too but I realised I was happier when I played chess.” According to Tania, many people sacrifice either their passion for sport to study or they sacrifice studies, but for Tania both were important. “It is just that I had to put in double the effort. Since I gave my 100% to whatever I did, I managed my studies too.”

Tania has won many national and international accolades. In 1994, she created history to become the first girl to win the boys title in British championship in Norwich ever since the British championship started 86 years ago. In the same event, she won five gold medals. In the year 2000, she won a gold medal in the Asia under-14 championship held in Tehran.

She was also listed in the Limca Book of Records as a world record holder for being the youngest to win a Gold Medal in an international event in the world. She became a Woman Grandmaster (WGM) at the age of 18. She made her final norm by drawing the 10th and penultimate round with Hungary’s Lajos Seres. Tania became the eighth Indian Woman Grandmaster joining the list of S Vijayalakshmi, Koneru Humpy, Aarthie Ramaswamy, S Meenakshi, D Harika, Nisha Mohota and Swati Ghate.
