NSUI leader Suraj Thakur suspended for allegedly dancing naked at a party in Mumbai

MUMBAI: Suraj Singh Thakur, the Mumbai chief of National Students Union of India (NSUI), has been suspended for allegedly dancing naked at a party function in the Mumbai suburb of Kandivili last month.

Reports on Tuesday stated that Thakur was drunk during a function and was caught on camera allegedly dancing naked at the NSUI camp held in Kandivili on April 14.

Thakur, who had been re-elected as NSUI president in December 2012, was suspended on Monday after the matter came to fore.

However, it is still unclear as to what made Thakur and two other NSUI office bearers do it.

Sources claim that there may have been a ragging of sorts with seniors asking the new entrants to button down.

The video of Thakur allegedly dancing naked was uploaded on YouTube and was trending, but it has now been removed from the website.

Beside Thakur, the NSUI national president has also suspended two other office bearers, who were also drunk at that time and caught shaking their leg with him.

Thakur shot to fame after he led vociferous protests against the book by Rajiv Gandhi's alleged killer A G Perarivalan in May 2011.

The NSUI is the students' wing of the Congress and the party has taken the matter very seriously. According to reports, Suraj Singh Thakur and two other NSUI office bearers could be expelled from the organisation after proper verification of the matter.

Shootout At Wadala Movie Review

Shootout At Wadala Movie Review: Watch out John's incredible act

Cast: Anil Kapoor, John Abraham, Kangana Ranaut, Manoj Bajpayee, Sonu Sood and Tusshar Kapoor
Direction: Sanjay Gupta
Genre: Crime

Movie Review: Sanjay Gupta's Shootout At Wadala largely draws inspiration from journalist-author S Hussain Zaidi's Dongri to Dubai-6 decades of the Mumbai mafia. But the maker takes the cinematic liberty of changing the material at hand to make his film and characters more engaging. Or should we say largely entertaining.

15 minutes into the film you know Gupta means business as knives gash, guns explode, blood flows, actors mouth expletives galore and items girl gyrate shamelessly.

SAW has two protagonists—Manya Surve( John Abraham) a bright college student from the 70s, who finds himself inexorably drawn into a vortex of crime. The other leading man is Aafaque Bagraan(Anil Kapoor) a trigger-happy cop who wants to clean up the streets of the maximum city.

As the police and the criminals play the regular usual cat and mouse game; the screenplay introduces the viewer to endless gangsters and their girls. There's Vidya( Kangana Ranaut), Manya's love-interest, Sheikh Munir(Tusshar Kapoor), Gyanchod (Siddhanth Kapoor) and a couple of more hoodlums who are his henchmen. And you have their deadly opponents—the Haksar brothers, Zubair ( Manoj Bajpayee) and Dilawar(Sonu Sood). Manya and Zubair wrest to take over the Mumbai mafia. Quite naturally the opposing gangs bay for one another's blood. And in true Bollywood style, the slaying is interrupted only with the swaying; so you have three item songs lined up. The first item has adult star, Sunny Leone, whose song—Laila teri Le Legi is alone worth the price of a ticket. This Canadian-Indian girl is such an object of desire; she makes other dance girls pale in comparison.

The other selling point of the film is Milap Zaveri's dialogue. Many of the lines are claptraps. But be warned, there's a liberal peppering of filthy lingo that will make you cringe. The performances are largely A-grade. Manoj tops the list. And though he's a Mafioso, his demeanour will get the maidens to melt. Sonu who plays Dilawar, succeeds in spreading menace and speaks eloquently with his eyes.

John is the one with the maximum screen time. From vulnerable to invincible, from a testosterone wonder to a believable actor, Manya is his career's best act. Tusshar is earnest and effective. Kangana may not have the item song benefit but she has recall value as the anguished gangster's moll.

Siddhant Kapoor, son of baddie Shakti Kapoor is also a young talent to watch out for.

Anil Kapoor does his encounter specialist act with elan. He's supported ably by Ronit Roy, Mahesh Manjrekar and Jackie Shroff who puts in a guest appearance as the police chief.

SAW ultimately belongs to Gupta, who stays true to the genre and makes a welcome return to the credible lot of Bollywood directors.

Kerala's Haritha V. Kumar secures first rank in civil services examinations

First Keralite in over 20 years to top civil services

By topping the civil services rank list of 2012 Haritha V. Kumar (26) has become the first Keralite in more than 20 years to achieve this distinction.

The last time a candidate from Kerala — Raju Narayanaswamy — bagged the top rank was in 1991.

An engineer by training and an ardent lover of Carnatic music, old Malayalam movie songs and Malayalam literature, Ms. Kumar is currently undergoing training as an Indian Revenue Service Probationer at the National Academy of Customs Excise and Narcotics (NACEN) at Faridabad. Her last shot at the civil services examination was in 2012.

Ms. Kumar, who resides at Thycaud, did her schooling at the St. Theresa’s Convent School in Neyyattinkara near here before joining the Electronics and Communication programme at the Government Engineering College, Barton Hill, here. Choosing Malayalam literature as an optional subject was a foregone conclusion for Ms. Kumar as she prepared to tackle the civil services examinations. She told The Hindu on Friday that empathy, induced by literature’s portrayal of the realities of life, was a much-needed quality in a civil servant. Her other optional subject was Economics.

Even while undergoing training for the IRS, Ms. Kumar had her sights set firmly on the Indian Administrative Service. According to her, the training she received at the NACEN and her daily discussions and debates with fellow officers at NACEN gave her the much-needed confidence and the poise to face the UPSC interview. She is among those who believe that hard, systematic work and unwavering dedication — and not much by way of brilliance — is what it takes to succeed in the civil services examinations.

Daughter of R. Vijayakumar — a businessman— and Chithra Vijayakumar, a homemaker, Ms. Kumar has two younger brothers who are twins. One of them is currently preparing to write the civil services examinations.

Shah Rukh Khan will be soon going under the knife. The super busy actor had been suffering from shoulder pain since the time he was working on his superhero flick, RA.One (2010). Although he’d undergone treatment for it then, the persistent ache will now require surgery to be cured.

VVS Laxman announced his retirement from international cricket

VVS Laxman with wife and children before a press conference to announce his retirement from international cricket at the Rajiv Gandhi International cricket stadium in Hyderabad on Saturday.

VVS Laxman brings curtains down on career V.V.S. Laxman, who won many a match for India with his wristy elegance including an epic 281 against Australia in Kolkata, on Saturday announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect, bringing down the curtains on a glorious career spanning 16 years. The 37-year-old Laxman, one of the finest batsmen in contemporary cricket, said that he felt it was the right time to bid adieu to the game which he played with “great pride for the country”.

“I would like to announce my retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. I think it’s right time to move on”, an emotional Laxman told a press conference in Hyderabad. Laxman, who was picked in the Indian squad for the two-match Test series against New Zealand beginning here from August 23, surprisingly chose to hang his boots with immediate effect without taking the opportunity to bow out of international cricket in front of his home crowd. “It was a tough decision to take, I have always listened to my inner conscience. The inner voice is a divine voice, I have always done that right through my career. There was a lot of debate in the last four days. I felt this is the right time to move on”, he said. Laxman, who earned the sobriquet ‘Very Very Special’ for his style and flair, played 134 Tests, amassing 8,781 runs at an average of 45.97. He scored 17 hundreds and 56 half centuries in the longer format of the game. Laxman, who was not a regular in India’s ODI team, played 86 matches for an aggregate of 2338 at an average of 30.76. Unfortunately for him, he could never be a part of India’s World Cup campaigns which remains one of his biggest regrets. “I have always kept my country’s success and need ahead of my personal aspirations. And while I would love contributing to the team’s success, especially against England and Australia, I think this is the right to give opportunity to the youngsters in home conditions ahead of international assignments”, he said. Laxman, however, made it clear that he will continue to play for Hyderabad till this year. “It was a dream for me to play for India since childhood and I am extremely thankful to the Almighty for giving me the opportunity to serve my country.”

“I always felt that through cricket I got an opportunity to serve my country. I was fortunate to play in an era when India played some of its best cricket, home as well as away.” “I would like to thank everyone who guided me and encouraged me through my career.” Laxman will always be remembered for the magnificent 281 he scored against Australia at the Eden Gardens in March 2001 -- an innings which didn’t just change the face of the match but also turned the entire series on its head. That knock was ranked sixth in Wisden’s list of 100 great Test innings in the history of the game. It was just one of the several match-winning knocks that the unassuming batsman played against the mighty Aussies at their peak. “When I remember that knock, I feel how lucky I was to be part of history. How we changed the result of that match. It is always emotional when I think of that knock”, he said. Asked whether he had taken a hasty decision for which he will regret later, he said “I never regret the decisions I take, because my conscience is clear. I got the privilege to serve the country. I am satisfied with the decision, definitely I will never regret that I took the decision“. “I always tried to my best to give everything to the team while mantaining my dignity. There were times I am sure I did not perform well, I disappointed them but I can assure that it was not due to lack of effort,” he said. “I conclude in all humility by praying to the Almighty to take and bless Indian cricket to the highest level in the world in all forms of the game.” “It has been an emotional, fabulous and memorable journey which I will definitely cherish for the rest of my life.” Laxman said. “I was very unfortunate to play with the collegues who played with a lot of pride, and most of them went on to become legends of the game. The affection, bonding and friendship they shared with me will always be cherished all my life,” Laxman said. Laxman said he has not decided what he will do post post retirement.

“My immediate and most important goal would be to share my experiences with the Hyderabad cricketers and if I can do what my seniors did when I was playing for Hyderabad earlier on in my career then I would be very happy.” “I learnt a lot from my seniors while I was growing up and if I can share some of my experiences, if I can help some these youngsters realise their potential I would be very happy.” “We took a lot of pride in the way we played for the country and we all had one single goal and one single ambition of that is to win matches consistently for the country, not only in India but also overseas and those efforts have been culminated into us being the no.1 Test playing nation of the world and I am sure the future players of Indian cricket will take our legacy forward.” The Hyderabad-stylist had come under scrutiny following his failure in the Test series against England and Australia last year.

Against England he scored just 182 runs for an average of 22.75 and was even worse against Australia, scoring 155 in eight innings at just 19.37 in the eight successive lost Tests that were played against the two sides. “There have been people who have criticised me but my set of well wishers have been more. I can tell you that it is not easy to please each and every person. Failure and success are part and parcel of a cricketer’s life”, he explained.

" Ranveer Singh & Deepika Padukone "

Deepika Padukone-Ranveer Singh: Newest jodi in B-Town?

Mumbai: She’s been in an intense relationship with Ranbir Kapoor earlier, and going by the way the tide seems to be advancing towards, Deepika Padukone might just have lost her heart to Ranbir’s quasi-namesake – Ranveer Singh!

After the ‘Ladies vs Ricky Bahl’ actor called it quits with his on-off girlfriend of three years, Anushka Sharma few days back, Ranveer Singh seems to have found a new ‘friend’ in Deepika Padukone. Padukone and the actor are playing co-actors in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s forthcoming ‘Ram Leela’.

While the two are yet to come out wearing their hearts out on their sleeves, we have a bit of inside information. A source recently revealed to a daily, “Ranveer and Anushka had a bitter break-up around two weeks back. They are no longer on talking terms. On the other hand, Ranveer met Deepika at the workshop of Sanjay Leela Bhansali`s Ram Leela in which they will be paired opposite each other for the first time. They have taken an instant liking for each other. Also, the duo then headed to Shaad`s residence for a party and remained there till the wee hours of the morning.”

Adding more flesh on to the observation, the source adds, “While it is clear that Deepika had no hand in the break-up of Ranveer and Anushka, it definitely seems that both Deepika and Ranveer seem to like each other and there is definitely something brewing between them.”

Well, well. Let’s hold our horses and keep all our antennae active, eh? For all you know, we might just be able to find out what ‘cocktail’ is being concocted in between Ranveer and Deepika!

Kalam awards Infosys prizes to six noted scientist

Bangalore: Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Monday awarded six distinguished scientists with the Infosys Prize 2011, instituted by the Infosys Science Foundation, a not-for-profit trust set up by India's IT bellwether.

The winners are Kanpur Genetic Algorithms Laboratory director Kalyanmoy Deb in engineering and computer science, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology scientist Imran Siddiqi in life sciences, Stanford University professor Kannan Soundararajan in mathematical sciences and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) physics professor Sriram Ramaswamy in physical sciences.

University of Chicago professor Raghuram G. Rajan and Centre for Policy Research chief executive Pratap Bhanu Mehta were awarded in Social Sciences (Economics and Political Science and International Relations respectively).

In recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions in scientific field and social arena, Kalam honoured each of the winners with a prize money of Rs.50 lakh ($100,000), a 22-karat gold medallion and a citation expounding the Infosys laureate's work.

The noted scientists were selected by the Foundation trustees and the eminent jury panels comprising Nobel laureate Amartya Sen for Social Sciences, Shrinivas Kulkarni (physical sciences), Pradeep K. Khosla (engineering and computer science), S.R. Varadhan (mathematical sciences) and Inder Verma (life sciences).

The Foundation is funded by a corpus of Rs.100 crore (Rs.10 billion), contributed by the trustees and an annual grant from the global software major.

The Infosys Prize is amongst the highest in terms of money given for any award in India.

Trust president and the company's former director T.V. Mohandas Pai also announced on the occasion that the Foundation would introduce a prize for Humanities from this year (2012) covering philosophy, history, archaeology, linguistics and literary studies.

Congratulating the winners, Kalam said the awards celebrate the success of researchers, their research work and their teachers from school to university.

"We live in a knowledge-based era and a nation's strength is truly judged by the quality of collective knowledge. It is important to recognise and encourage productive academic pursuits. Initiatives like Infosys Prize will boost the confidence of researchers in physical, biological and social sciences and related fields," he said after presenting the awards.

Lauding the winners for world-class contributions in their respective areas of specialisation, Infosys chairman emeritus N.R. Narayana Murthy said the prestigious prize for the third year was a commitment to encourage the distinguished scientists at a time when it could make a greater difference to their career and attract young minds to research.

"The winners' effort and dedication to science, discovery and development will inspire educationists and researchers in India and the world over to strive harder to excel in science and technology and attain global recognition," he said on the occasion.

In his address on the occasion, Pai said scientific research was the bedrock of social and technological progress of any economy and the awards were not only intended to recognise outstanding scientists, but also to motivate the research community and persuade bright young people to adopt careers in research.

"There is a significant depth of scientific talent in the country and the objective of the Infosys Prize is to identify and encourage such outstanding talent," Pai added.

Players Movie Review

Cast: Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bipasha Basu, Bobby Deol, Omi Vaidya, Sonam Kapoor, Vinod Khanna, Sikander Kher, Johnny Lever
Direction: Abbas Mustan
Genre: Thriller

Story: In 1915 Romania sent its pure gold collection worth a zillion crores to Russia for safe deposit. Russia of course chose to never give it back. But now good bilateral terms between the two countries means Russia is sending all that gold back to Romania. How? Just the way it came -- by train. That simple? Not really especially when there are some well trained players out there whose mission is to get that gold....

Movie Review: From its very original version in 1969, with its classic cast of Michael Caine, Noel Coward and Benny Hill to the much later 2003 version with Donald Sutherland, Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and other stalwarts, the Italian Job has been entertaining its viewers as amongst Hollywood's most fascinating thriller films which involve a simple plot of stealing gold worth $35 million from the canals of Venice to LA. The transfer is supposed to take place over a high Alpine pass that hasn't been disturbed since the time of Hannibal and the fact that it all gets messed up due to human error and modern technology only makes humans to turn out more puny than they seem. Natural laws are after all always supreme, never to be challenged. But ah! for human greed... Can you expect something like this from our desi Players, a supposedly Indian vision of the Italian Job?

Charlie ( Abhishek Bachchan) is the catalyst behind the mission to steal gold worth crores for himself and his role model Victor Dada ( Vinod Khanna). Naturally then, Dada, the bad man in jail repenting for his earlier sins, helps Charlie form a team of the world's best players. Once the team is in place, the deadline is 10 odd minutes to steal the gold from a moving train. This leads to a series of events where traitors and loyals are revealed creating mayhem in the hurriedly patched up team. While Bilal ( Sikander Kher) as the explosive expert and Rony ( Bobby Deol) as the illusionist make a brief cameo, it is Johnny Lever as the auto expert and Sunny ( Omi Vaidya) as the makeup expert who do manage to tickle the funny bone with their usual antics. On the other hand, Abhishek once again reprises the character of Dhoom he seems to have perfected while Bipasha goes glam as in Race. She doesn't mind bad company as long as it takes her to the pinnacle of material success. Sonam Kapoor (Naina) joins the team in the second half (though she is there in bits and piece in the first half). She wants to meet Neil since he is the one who killed her dad. That's where she puts her hacking knowledge and her body/looks to use since she is the only one Neil has not met before. But eventually, it is Neil Nitin Mukesh (Spider), the ultimate no-strings-attached man, wild gambler at heart with a twist in the soul and tango in the feet, who slam dances his way away as the ultimate crook. Music by Pritam is good while it lasts. Some editing sorely needed, visual imagery quite polished, and the look as usual is of new age Bollywood.

But would you go out for a DVD of Players and put it in that cherished section of your home video corner saying: Hundred movies to see before you die! All you brave Indian filmmakers, do pick up classics, but first, get a bit classic yourself and learn about cult film making which is so much different from commercial cinema. You'll find the difference. Your Bollywood ventures end up like cold cuts - stylishly done - are so different from piping hot goulash.
