Michael Jacksons Hair is on Fire |
Video of Jackson's hair on fire surfaces after 25 years
Us Weekly magazine has obtained a video that shows never-before-seen footage of Michael Jackson's head catching on fire during filming of his 1984 Pepsi commercial.
Jackson suffered severe burns after a pyrotechnics mishap caused his hair and scalp to catch fire. Still photos of the accident have been seen before, but the new video on Us Weekly's website shows the moment Jackson's hair caught on fire and the top of his head became engulfed in flames.
Jackson didn't realise his hair was on fire. In the video, he's still dancing as the flames are on his head. When he spins, the flames go out. People on the set tackle him to extinguish the fire, and his brother Jermaine Jackson, playing the guitar in front of him and oblivious to the commotion, turns around. When Michael Jackson emerges from the pile of people trying to help him, the top of his head is bald.
The accident, witnessed by thousands of stunned fans at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, came at the height of Jackson's fame, about a year after the release of his best-selling Thriller album.
It marked what would be the beginning of serious, lifelong pain for Jackson, who had been treated for painkiller addiction and has been described by relatives and friends as being hooked on pain medication at the time of his death last month at age 50.
Jackson, who was photographed in an ambulance with a bandage on his head and his trademark sequined white glove on his right hand, required several surgeries and needed skin grafts to treat the injury.
In his autobiography, Moonwalk, he described the cause of the accident as "stupidity, pure and simple."
As he described the accident, he wrote: "... bombs went off on either side of my head, and the sparks set my hair on fire. I was dancing down this ramp and turning around, spinning, not knowing I was on fire. Suddenly I felt my hands reflexively go to my head in an attempt to smother the flames."
As a result of the accident, Pepsi gave Jackson $1.5 million, which he donated to a burn centre named after him.

Rape-tainted Shiney Ahuja to stay in jail |
In what comes as a huge setback for rape accused Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, a sessions court in Mumbai on Wednesday (July 8) rejected his bail application, after arguments posed by the prosecution and defence counsel concluded yesterday. The actor will now continue to remain in judicial custody till July 16.
This order from the court comes after repeated demands were made by the prosecution for some more time to investigate the case and gather evidence. The prosecution also said that the accused is capable of influencing the case and the witnesses, hence bail should not be granted to him.
However, soon after the order, the defence counsel remained mum. But sources have said that the defence is likely to appeal in the high court.
Terming the rape charge against him by his maid servant as "concocted", incarcerated actor Shiney Ahuja pleaded for bail yesterday but the police opposed it saying the accused might intimidate her if he is released.
Ahuja was arrested on June 15 after his 20-year-old maid accused him of raping her in his Oshiwara home. The actor is currently lodged at the Central Prison on Arthur Road and his judicial custody has been extended till July 16.

Iraqi shoe-thrower at President Bush sentenced to three years in jail |
Iraqi shoe-thrower jailed for three years
An Iraqi court on Thursday jailed for three years the journalist who shot to fame in the Arab world for throwing his shoes at former US president George W. Bush.
Muntazer al-Zaidi, a 30-year-old television journalist, had pleaded not guilty at the hearing in the Iraq Central Criminal Court to assaulting Bush during his farewell visit to Iraq last year.
"He was sentenced to three years in jail," defence lawyer Yahia Attabi told reporters outside the Baghdad court.
"We expected the decision because under the Iraqi criminal code he was charged with assaulting a foreign leader on an official visit," Attabi said, adding: "We will appeal this decision."
Zaidi, whose shoe-hurling gesture is considered a grave insult in the Arab and Muslim world, had risked up to 15 years in jail on the charge of aggression against a foreign head of state during an official visit.
The former US president, deeply unpopular in the Arab world for ordering the 2003 invasion of Iraq, had been at a globally-televised media conference with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki when Zaidi let rip with his shoes, zinging them at Bush, who managed to duck just in time.
When Judge Abdulamir Hassan al-Rubaie asked Zaidi if he was innocent, the journalist responded: "Yes, my reaction was natural, just like any Iraqi (would have done)."
After the verdict, his 25-strong defence team emerged to scenes of chaos outside the court, where several family members screamed: "It's an American court... sons of dogs."
Wearing a light-brown suit, brown sweatshirt and thin-framed glasses, Zaidi had been brought into the packed courtroom under a heavy police escort.
Chief defence lawyer Ehiya al-Sadi had argued that his client's motives were "honourable."
"He was only expressing his feelings. What he could see was the blood of Iraqis at his feet when he watched the US president speaking about his achievements in Iraq."
He also argued that although Iraqi law considered it an attack on a visiting head of state, "his throwing of the shoe did not cause any injury or damage.
"The president did not lose a leg or hand or finger. It was not an attempt to murder but an attempted assault.
"But it was not a real assault because he wanted to insult the president. The way he did it was buy throwing a shoe not a mortar or bomb.
"His goal was to insult Bush for the the pain Iraqis have suffered.
He asked for the court to consider Zaidi innocent and take note of the fact that he had already been in jail for three months.
The trial first opened on February 19 but was adjourned to determine the nature of Bush's December 14 visit. The judge told the court that government ministers had declared it official.
There was standing room only on Thursday at the courtroom on the edge of Baghdad's high security Green Zone as some 200 family members, reporters and lawyers crowded in.
One of Zaidi's brothers, Uday, had told AFP he expected Muntazer to be found guilty, describing the trial as a "farce."
The Baghdadia television reporter told the court in February that he had been outraged and was unable to control his emotions when Bush started speaking at the December media conference.
"I had the feeling that the blood of innocent people was dropping on my feet during the time that he was smiling and coming to say bye-bye to Iraq with a dinner.
"So I took the first shoe and threw it but it did not hit him. Then spontaneously I took the second shoe but it did not hit him either. I was not trying to kill the commander of the occupation forces of Iraq."
As well as throwing the shoe, Zaidi also insulted Bush verbally, shouting: "It is the farewell kiss, you dog," before security forces wrestled him to the ground.
Zaidi said he had been beaten and tortured while in custody.
His brothers told AFP they wanted to bring torture charges against Bush, Maliki and his bodyguards at a human rights court in either Belgium or Spain.
A Syrian lawyer said she was preparing to file a complaint.

Irrfan Khan, Resul Pookutty treated badly |
One brought home an Oscar, the other starred in an Oscar winning movie. We are talking of Slumdog Millionaire sound mixer Resul Pookutty and actor Irrfan Khan. On landing in Mumbai these two were transported in a police criminal van!
Rewind to two hours earlier when singer Kylie Minogue landed. This pop princess had a private security agency and a Hummer at her disposal. What’s more, the agency’s owner (who is a TV actor) personally escorted Kylie from the airport. Now that’s what we call star treatment.
We wonder why there is such a difference.

SMILE PINKI, the captivating story of a desperately poor little girl in rural India whose life is magically transformed when she receives free surgery to correct her cleft lip has received a coveted Oscar nomination on January 22, 2009 in the category of best documentary short subject. Pinki, is a 5 year old girl who is living with a severe cleft in one of the poorest areas of India. Not allowed to attend school and ostracized because of her deformity, Pinki lives a life of quiet desperation as she waits and wonders if she will ever receive the cleft surgery her parents could never afford and that she so desperately needs. By chance, Pinkis parents meet a social worker one day who is traveling village to village, gathering patients for a hospital that provides free cleft surgery to thousands of poor children each year through the Smile Train program.
SMILE PINKI sheds light on the global problem of cleft lip and cleft palate. According to Smile Train, more than 4.7 million children in developing countries suffer with unrepaired clefts. Over the past 10 years, Smile Train has provided free cleft surgery for hundreds of thousands of children who would otherwise never have received it. The organization is the worlds leading cleft charity with thousands of partners and programs in 76 of the worlds poorest countries.
