Why did Akki miss Shilpa's wedding? |
Akshay Kumar doesn’t dodge questions. He knows what works and throws it right at you. The promotion of his new film De Dana Dan, he clarifies, wasn’t the only reason that kept him from attending ex-flame Shilpa Shetty’s wedding last week. "I wasn’t invited to the wedding. So you didn’t see me there,” he says in all seriousness. "And of course I’d like to wish her well."
The Chura Ke Dil Mera couple last met on the finale of Bigg Boss season 2 in 2008, and the camera captured evident discomfort between the two. But wishing Shilpa a happy married life, King Kumar moves on to discuss his lucky lady mascot, Katrina Kaif. “I think we both are lucky for each other," he says of the hits they’ve delivered together. “But Katrina was keen on doing an out-and-out comedy with Priyadarshan, and that’s how we got her on board for De Dana Dan. It was a little difficult for her to settle into Priyan’s style of work, but she got it eventually."
Akshay, who currently enjoys the status of being one of the top stars of the industry, struck an ace when he signed director Farah Khan’s directorial venture, Tees Maar Khan recently. While many see it as the end of the Farah-Shah Rukh Khan camp, Akki declares, “There is no camp; I work with everyone. If I like the script of the film, I do it. Everything is just fine.”
The self-confessed sports freak who’s all set to bear the torch in the Winter Olympics to be held in Canada next month, also trashes rumours of having applied for a Canadian citizenship. “I love the country but I’m not even thinking about those things,” he says. “Of course, I’m very excited to hold the torch next month. You know, I’ll do anything for sports. I come from a household where we saw all these events on a black and white television set. So I still find it all strange.”

Indian President Pratibha Patil flies in fighter jet |
President makes a strong case for women fighter pilots
President Pratibha Patil, who on Wednesday became the first woman head of state to fly in a combat plane, has made out a strong case for the induction of women fighter pilots
into the Indian Air Force.
President Patil’s flight aboard a Sukhoi-30MKI, undertaken in a `G-Suit,’ the attire worn by fighter pilots, was expected to give a strong push to the demand for assigning a new role to women officers working in the IAF, particularly those who were already flying choppers and transport planes, and were rooting for being inducted as fighter pilots.
``The technical requirements and qualifications and situations which one has to face are the issues which experts and the govt will decide and consider. But let me tell you, I have full faith in our women. They have the capability and the ability...they have done exceedingly well...and I have no doubt about their capabilities,’’ she remarked, in what was being seen as a thumbs-up for the demand by female pilots to allow them to fly fighter jets.
Ms Patil is the second President, after her predecessor A P J Abdul Kalam, to fly in a fighter jet. Kalam was flown in a Sukhoi in 2006. Ms Patil said she had been preparing well for the event. ``I had been working out on a treadmill and doing yoga. I exercise regularly, so it was not very difficult,’’ she said, smiling.
Wing Commander S Sajan, who piloted her, maintained she was natural: ``She was very confident...she even recognised the Baramati air-strip,’’ he said after the 30-minute long sortie.
Flashing a victory sign after landing at the Lohegoan air force base here, the 74-year old President shook hands with Wing Commander Sajan and patted him for a smooth sortie in the combat jet plane.
Ms Patil, who also become the oldest woman to fly in a warplane, posed for photographs on the tarmac with the pilot, who has over 3200 hours of flying experience, top officers and the aircraft maintenance staff.
Shortly after landing, the President was driven to a rest house where she underwent a medical check up. A pre-flight medical test had given the President a green signal for undertaking the journey.
Before taking off, she was briefed about emergency exit procedures and various parameters of the flight in the Sukhoi-30 aircraft of city-based 30 squadron, the ‘Rhinos’.
A Sukhoi, India’s most advanced fighter plane, can carry eight tonnes of armaments and fly over 3,000 km with onboard fuel and can undertake an extended journey of up to 5,000 km with a single air-to-air refuelling.

Shamita Shetty Chose to Exit Bigg Boss |
'No game show is bigger than my family'
With sister Shilpa Shetty's wedding coming up on November 22, Shamita chose to exit Bigg Boss being up for eviction.
Shamita did not want to miss the wedding, like she missed the engagement a couple of days ago.
She tells Rajul Hegde about her stint in Bigg Boss.
What was the first thing you did after you came out of the house?
The minute I got out, I grabbed the nearest person's phone and called my sister. We are extremely close and I'm so glad I will be able to attend her wedding. I know how difficult it must have been for her to get engaged without me. But since I got to know about her wedding date, I wanted to be with her no matter what. Family comes first for me. I'm happy to be out.
Why has Shilpa brought forward her wedding from January 17 to November 22?
Shilpa had decided to get married on January 17 due to Sunny Deol's shooting schedule in November.
Shilpa and my mom believe in astrology. They must have rescheduled the wedding because of the planetary positions in her astrological charts. Her shooting must have also gotten cancelled. I spoke to her for only five minutes after coming out, so I can't tell you the reason.
How did you react when you learnt about Shilpa's engagement?
(Housemate) Pravesh Rana told me about Shilpa's engagement and the November wedding. He was not sure about the date. I was really confused, upset and restless as I got to know such important news from a stranger. Bigg Boss did not even bother to inform me.
I wanted to ask Bigg Boss whether she was really getting married this month. After three days, they accepted my request and called me to the confession room. A box of ladoos and an envelope were kept on the table. On the cover, it was written that we want to see a child in you more often and keep smiling. I started crying immediately after reading it.
My mother had mentioned in the letter that Shilpa is shooting till November 10 and that I should come out on November 13. I told Bigg Boss that I wanted half an hour to decide. Then I told Bigg Boss that I want to come out; no game show is bigger than my family.
I came out of the confession room and informed everyone of the options given to me. Before I could complete my sentence, they told me that I had to stay another week with them. I was happy to know that they loved me, so I spent another week there.
Were you upset after you heard about Shilpa's engagement?
Yes, I was. But Shilpa had written the letter very sweetly. It was an emotional letter that brought tears to my eyes. I was sad that I missed such an important day but I did not think negatively.
Will your outfit for the wedding be ready on time?
I had spoken to (fashion designer) Tarun Tahiliani before I entered the house, as the wedding was supposed to happen in January. So the basic meeting has already happened. I was worried about who will stitch my clothes within 10 days and how I would manage it. But Shilpa told me that she had organised everything. So I don't have to plan from scratch.
Any lessons learnt at Bigg Boss?
I have done a lot of work like cleaning and cooking. I want to make a dish for Shilpa called Kada prasad (a Sikh prasad made of wheat), which Poonamji (Dhillon) taught me. It is fattening but I will make it for her.
How was your experience in the house?
I learnt some shocking truths when I came out of the house. I did not go there with any plan; it was a show for me. I knew that whatever I would do in the show, it would remain with me till the end of my life. So I did not want to hurt anyone. There was no enemy in the house, though certain people played games. I recognised Rohit's (Verma) attitude. I hope his friends will make him understand. I am fortunate I came out of the house at the right time. It's becoming dirtier now.
Did you make any friends on the show?
Aditi Gowitrikar, Bhakthiyar and Tanaaz Irani are friends for life. I want one of them to win the show. I feel sorry for locking Aditi in jail during one of the tasks.
Will you return to the show?
Honestly, I have just come out and this is just sinking in. I want to go home and prepare for the wedding. I have not thought of the wild card yet.
