Polish hammer thrower Kamila Skolimowska Biography |
Skolimowska Biography
Kamila Skolimowska (4 November 1982 – 18 February 2009) was a Polish hammer thrower. She was known for her Olympic gold medal in Sydney 2000, which made her the youngest Olympic hammer champion, as well as for her two medals from the European Championships. Her personal best throw, and Polish record, was 76.83 metres, achieved in May 2007 in Doha. She died on 18 February 2009 in Vila Real de Santo António during Polish national team training camp.
Early life and career
She was born in Warsaw. Skolimowska first made herself known at age fifteen, when she won the hammer throw event at the 1997 European Junior Championships; the first time hammer throw was staged at the European Junior Championships. She was actually fourteen years and 264 days at the time, and had become Polish national champion and record holder the year before. Her personal best in 1997 was 63.48 metres. She improved her personal best to 66.62 metres in 1999. She also finished seventh at the 1998 European Championships, won the 1999 World Youth Championships and finished twenty-first at the 1999 World Championships.
Olympic champion
At the 2000 Summer Olympics she won a gold medal in the hammer throw, with a new personal best throw of 71.16 metres. At age 17 years and 331 days, Skolimowska became the youngest Olympic hammer champion. As it was the first time that the women's hammer throw was staged at the Olympics, she also set an Olympic record, which stood for four years. She received the Polish Golden Cross of Merit for her achievement.
Career after the Olympic gold
In the 2001 season, she finished fourth at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, with a throw of 68.05 metres. One month later she improved her national record to 71.71 metres, which was enough to win the IAAF Grand Prix Final in Melbourne. In 2002 she took her first championships medal since the Olympic victory, at the 2002 European Championships. Throwing 72.46 metres to take the silver medal behind Olga Kuzenkova, she almost improved on her 72.60 result achieved in June in Bydgoszcz. Toward the end of the season she finished fifth at the 2002 World Cup.
Skolimowska did not set new national records in 2003 and 2004. In 2003 she finished eighth both at the 2003 World Championships and the 2003 World Athletics Final. In the final round of the hammer throw at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens she recorded a season best of 72.57 metres, placing fifth overall in the event. She again finished fifth at the 2004 World Athletics Final.
New records
In July 2005 Skolimowska improved her national record to 74.27 metres, the result being achieved in Madrid. Exactly one month later she won the gold medal at the Universiade, four days after finishing seventh at the 2005 World Championships. At the 2005 World Athletics Final she finished second. In 2006 Skolimowska improved her national record again; to 75.29 as she won the 2006 World Cup meet in September in Athens. The record crowned a successful year, with a bronze medal at the 2006 European Championships and a second place at the 2006 World Athletics Final earlier in the season. In 2007 Skolimowska improved with more than a metre, throwing 76.83 in May at the Super Grand Prix meet in Doha. She finished fourth at both the 2007 World Championships and the 2007 World Athletics Final.
2008, however, was an unsuccesful year. Her season's best was only 73.50, achieved in June in Warsaw. In the Olympic competition, she did progress from the qualifying round, but failed to register a valid mark in the final, ending in last place.
She died at the age of 26 during a training session in Portugal, probably due to a heart attack or a pulmonary embolism.

I do get frustrated on the field, says Dhoni |
The frustration does not show but Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Wednesday said he does get upset at times when a teammate makes a mistake while fielding.
"I do get frustrated at times when a mistake is made on the field. But I feel there's no point in abusing him there. I prefer to go back into the dressing room and point out his mistake. That helps him more," Dhoni said after the unveiling of the Indian team's new one-day kit - bold blue in colour - along with other teammates.
Dhoni described the forthcoming tour of New Zealand as a tough assignment but said whether at home or away, international cricket was always a difficult proposition.
"It's better to start as underdogs (in a series). It's going to be tough, but international cricket is tough whether at home or away. We have heard how beautiful it (New Zealand) is. We would enjoy the tour and hopefully would come back with a couple of trophies.
"We don't bother whether we are playing Sri Lanka or any other country", he said.
Dhoni, meanwhile, made it clear that he did not intend to try bungee jumping in New Zealand as his contract prohibits him from doing so.
Dhoni has been invited by Tourism Auckland to take up the challenge and bungee jump from the Auckland Harbour as a "stress buster".
Teammate Yuvraj Singh supported Dhoni and said "Our tour contract does not allow us to do bungee jumping."
The Indian squad is set to depart for New Zealand early Thursday morning after attending the Cricket Board's annual awards function here this evening.
Yuvraj, who got back-to-back man of the match awards in the last two One-Day International series, did not wish to comment whether he enjoyed playing at number four. All he repeatedly said was "Please ask Dhoni".
Zaheer Khan, also among the six New Zealand-bound team members to walk the ramp with the new ODI outfit, said that he was enjoying the responsibility of leading the Indian attack.
"I'm enjoying the responsibility. It will definitely help me in keeping my focus and get to the next level", he said while welcoming the new "Dri-Fit" outfit, designed and produced by BCCI's official apparel sponsors Nike, as ideal in hot conditions.
Yuvraj quipped the Mumbai left-arm pacer was the leader off the field too, adding "please ask Dhoni about it".
"The new outfit will help us in hot conditions", he said. Rohit Sharma, Dinesh Karthik and Pragyan Ojha were the other three players to sport the new outfit at the function.

Martial Arts Expert Challenges Chris Brown to a Fight |
Chris Brown may need a ring doctor instead of a spin doctor.
Anthony Geisler, president of LA Boxing, has created a Facebook group called “I Want to Fight Chris Brown,” to challenge the R&B singer to a fight in the ring to see “what it's like to face a real opponent.”
Earlier this month, Brown, 19, was arrested for making criminal threats after a woman accused him of assaulting her. The woman, who was later identified as Brown’s pop-star girlfriend Rihanna, 20, reportedly had several facial contusions and bite marks.
Last Sunday, Brown apologized for his actions, vowing to get therapy to work on his issues.
But there are at least 45 people who would prefer Brown step into the ring with Geisler, whose kickboxing and mixed martial arts training organization is the largest in the world.
VIDEO: Watch FOXNews.com videos about Chris Brown.
All have signed up to be members of the group, which encourages people to join if they would like to be next in line to fight Brown.
Could Brown be in for what some might say are his just desserts? We will have to wait and see. But Brown does have a few big names in his corner.
Last week, actor Terrence Howard told Hollywood.tv that the alleged attack was “just life man. Chris is a great guy. He’ll be all right. Rihanna knows he loves her. They’ll be alright. Everyone has just got to get out of their way.”

He later retracted his statement, saying that had he known what Brown was accused of, he never would have said anything so “insensitive.”
[Incidentally, The Smoking Gun recently revealed that Howard was previously charged with simple assault, terroristic threats, harassment and stalking in 2002 when he broke into his estranged wife’s home and punched her twice in the face with a closed fist, just like Brown is accused of doing.]
Maybe there should be a Facebook group for Terrence too.

But at least Chris has former-reality-star-turned-Playboy-cover-girl Aubrey O’Day on his side. She told FOXNews.com that we should just give Chris his space and let him and Rihanna figure the situation out.
“You never really know what happens between two people, and until you do, you shouldn’t judge,” she said at the William Rast show at New York Fashion Week. “I think it was wise for Chris to come forward and apologize, but we should just give them their space and let them figure it out.”
Maybe so, but holding back judgment won’t save him from a potential beat down in the ring.

Amitabh, SRK cold war between |
The cold war between Amitabh Bachchan Shah Rukh Khan seems to have finally ended.
On Wednesday night, Bachchan visited SRK at his home, Mannat, in Mumbai's Bandra. Shah Rukh had undergone a surgery on Monday, and was discharged the next day.
'Amidst all the attention that was required that was work related, I was happy to have visited Shahrukh and to have found him cheerful and recovering,' Amitabh wrote in his blog. 'There is pain and his left arm is in a sling, but all else is fine. I conveyed some of the wishes that came for him via the blog.'
Shah Rukh was admitted in Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital to get his right shoulder operated after he injured himself in December on the sets of his film, Dulha Mil Gaya.
Although much was written about the Bachchan-SRK war, neither of them have openly talked about it. It all started when SRK had a tiff with Amar Singh , Bachchan's close friend, during an award function in Dubai. SRK publically said that he saw 'darindigi' (evil intentions) in Singh's eyes.

'American Idol' selects first 3 finalists |
Tatiana Del Toro had something else to cry about. The emotional 28-year-old crooner from San Juan, Puerto Rico, was one of nine "American Idol" semifinalists sent packing Wednesday. Del Toro, whom judge Simon Cowell called a "drama queen" after her performance Tuesday, bawled after she wasn't selected to continue in the "Fox" singing competition.
"It's up to America," she told host Ryan Seacrest before the results. "It's up to the power of love."
No tears were shed by the first three finalists of season eight: Alexis Grace, the soulful 21-year-old single mother from Memphis, Tenn.; Michael Sarver, the beefy 27-year-old oil rig worker from Jasper, Texas; and Danny Gokey, the spikey-haired 28-year-old church music director from Milwaukee. The trio received the most viewer votes.
Recent widower Gokey overwhelmed the judges with Mariah Carey's "Hero" at the conclusion of Tuesday's ho-hum performance episode. They were also impressed with Grace's take on Aretha Franklin's "Never Loved a Man," comparing her to first "Idol" Kelly Clarkson. Sarver, who sang Gavin Degraw's "I Don't Wanna Be," received a mixed reaction from the panel.
"I think if you get through, it's because people like you," Cowell told Sarver on Tuesday.
Next week, 12 more semifinalists will vie for three spots in the competition's top 12, but Del Toro and the other dismissed semifinalists, such as Anoop Desai and Ricky Braddy, may have another chance. After the first nine finalists are selected by viewer votes, the judges will pick the last three finalists following a wild card round March 5.

Freida-Rohan's secret wedding revealed! |
Freida Pinto and Rohan Antao had a secret wedding in Goa in December 2007; she dumped him after the success of her debut film, Slumdog Millionaire The controversies that Freida Pinto is embroiled in are directly proportionate to the adulation that she is enjoying post Slumdog Millionaire. After several rumours of her promptly calling off her engagement and dumping fiancé Rohan Antao after she shot to fame, there is a new secret that we recently heard about Freida.
According to a source, Freida and Rohan had a secret wedding in Goa in December 2007. In fact, Freida got her wedding gown made from a designer in Lokhandwala after clearly telling the designer that it was for her wedding. A close friend of Freida and Rohan said, “Rohan and Freida were extremely close and have several common friends. Both are 24 years old and were deeply in love with each other. They had decided that they would get married in Goa, which is Rohan's hometown. They had booked a hotel for the wedding. Freida had given the designer just five days to make her gown as the wedding had to take place in late December 2007. Once the gown was almost ready, Freida also had a dress trial to which Rohan had accompanied her.” Freida had told her close friends that she would be having a secret wedding as she didn't want too many people to know about it.
“Rohan and Freida had decided to keep their marriage a secret till they felt ready to talk about it openly. Even though she has dumped her husband Rohan now, he is not the kind who will go out and speak against her. In fact, they were together even when she completed shooting for Slumdog Millionaire. But once the film started making waves internationally, she decided to dump Rohan,” added the source.
So are they officially divorced now? The friend said, “Nothing is clear as yet. Rohan is still in shock at being dumped. He changed his status in the networking site Facebook from 'committed' to 'single' earlier this month. In fact, Freida was unhappy when Rohan had earlier written 'engaged' in his relationship status on the site.” Despite sending repeated text messages to Freida, she remained unavailable for comment.

'Billu' in trouble again over lyrics |
The MNS workers in Mumbai on Tuesday launched a peaceful protest against screening of the film 'Billu' for its song 'Marjaani', which allegedly contains "objectionable words".
The film produced by Red Chillies Productions, partly owned by Shahrukh Khan had to be renamed 'Billu' from 'Billu Barber' after some barber associations objected to use of the word "barber" in the title.
The film which was released on February 13 ran into controversy again this time for the lyrics of the superhit song "Marjaani" with MNS activists demanding it be removed from the film.
"There is a song in the film called Marjaani, which contains some objectionable words. We had requested the producer on phone to remove those words but they remained adamant. This is why we have launched a peaceful agitation to remove the whole song from the film," MNS Secretary Aslam Bhai Khot told reporters.
Meanwhile, the film's leading actor Irrfan Khan, who plays the title role of 'Billu' has expressed his surprise at the protest.
"The misunderstanding regarding the song had been cleared by Shahrukh Khan. What is the basis of this protest except that they need public attention," Irrfan said.

Shah Rukh Khan shoulder op successful, to be discharged soon |
Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan underwent a successful shoulder surgery at the Breach Candy hospital in south Mumbai Monday and will be discharged in a couple of days, a source close to the actor said.
"Shah Rukh is fine, he will be discharged after a few days," said a source close to the actor after the surgery ended in the evening.
Close friends like Farah Khan were there with the actor and his family.
A few days before the surgery, Shah Rukh had told reporters that he would "get back to work within two to three months" of his surgery.
The actor had to undergo an arthroscopic surgery for a nagging pain in left shoulder. Though he had planned to fly to London for the surgery, he chose to get it done in Mumbai under the guidance of Sanjay Desai, the orthopaedic surgeon at Breach Candy.
Shah Rukh's date for the surgery got postponed due to his movie commitments. He had injured his shoulder a long time ago, but the condition aggravated in December last year.
He managed with physiotherapy sessions. Ignoring the pain he flew to Los Angeles for Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan.
A source said: "For Shah Rukh, the last few months have been quite busy professionally. There was Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi promotion as well as the shoot of Dulha Mil Gaya. Then he couldn't have backed out of My Name is Khan, which had anyways been pushed ahead by a few months.
"Moreover, he had to return to India for the publicity of Billu. Though doctors had suggested a surgery on an ASAP note, he didn't want the film to suffer. So, even with a sling on, he went through the entire promotional campaign. It was painful but he is passionate about his films and kept smiling."

A full-frontal, nude photo of a 20-year-old Madonna fetched $37,500 at auction Thursday, an apparent record auction price for a photograph of the superstar singer.
An unnamed European buyer bought the picture, which had been expected to sell for up to $15,000, according to Christie's auction house.
Madonna, then known as Madonna Louise Ciccone, was a dancer trying to make ends meet when she answered a newspaper ad seeking a nude model. She may have earned as little as $25 for the 1979 photo session.
Lee Friedlander's raw, explicit black-and-white image appeared in Playboy in 1985. Friedlander has said of the photo session that Madonna "seemed very confident, a street-wise girl. She told me she was putting a band together but half the kids that age are doing that. She was a good professional model."
The photograph auctioned Thursday was one of six from that shoot that appeared in Playboy; the other five pictures were sold together in 2003 for $7,170.
A Herb Ritts photo of Madonna's "True Blue" album cover, which sold for more than $15,000 in 2006, is the most expensive photograph of the singer to sell previously at auction, Christie's said.
Another photograph of Madonna, by Helmut Newton, sold Thursday for $18,750, beating a $15,000 estimate. In that shot, also sold to Playboy in the 1980s, Madonna sports lingerie, curly blond hair and a seductive expression. A man kneels beside her.
The Madonna photos were among 150 images, by some of the biggest names in photography, auctioned from the collection of Leon and Michaela Constantiner. They feature fashion and other celebrity icons.
The sale fetched more than $900,000 in all, including a top price of $242,500 for "Sie Kommen," Newton's images of nude models for the Italian and French versions of Vogue in the 1980s.
